Breakthrough Spotting...?!
Question: Breakthrough Spotting....?
I am 15 days away from my "period day", I'm not on birth control pills and I haven't had sex. Still, I'm experiencing some breakthrough spotting, that is to say, a mix of discharge and blood. It started 5 days ago, and it's been going on since then, app. 3 times a day. What could cause this.?Health Question & Answer

Ok, this is tough because it really depends on so many factors to determine what is going on with you right now. If you're not having sex and you're not on birth control, that definitely rules out the biggest two things.
Here's some questions you should ask yourself to get to the bottom of this:
1. Are you on any other new medications.?
2. Have you fallen or done anything lately that may have injured your vaginal area.?
If you answered no to both of these, then the next thing to take into consideration is how much blood are you actually seeing when you're "spotting".? The reason I ask this is because if it's a relatively small amount, then that's normal. Spotting in the middle of your cycle, or ten to fourteen days prior to the start of the next cycle, is normal too. This spotting may occur during ovulation. Mid-cycle spotting may occur for several reasons. When the egg bursts through the follicle, some bleeding may occur. Alternatively, during ovulation, levels of estrogen rise, sometimes prompting the uterus to shed a bit of lining, which shows up as spotting.
So, since you say you don't start for another 15 days, my guess is that it's all normal and part of ovulation. However, if there is severe pain associated with your spotting or if the "flow" and amount of blood you see increases greatly, get to a doctor ASAP.

It depends on if your cycles are regular or not. It also depends on age. I know some girls take a year or so to get their periods normally. Health Question & Answer
