In polycystic ovarian syndrome the egg is not released; instead the follicle becomes thick and continues to produce estrogen as well as androgen, a male sex hormone. The extra estrogen further stimulates the pituitary to release it's FSH and LH, and more follicles begin to grow. Eventually, the ovary becomes engulfed with cysts.
