I got my period right before camp too! I was 13 years old.
Except at my camp, we had to go swimming and hiking and everything
because it was summer time. We also rode horses (which scared me a lot while on my period!) I am 17 years old now and I know a lot about periods.

Basically, buy your tampons at a drug store like Walgreens or CVS. You are less likely to see people you know. Its really not a big deal though. It used to be really awkward for me and I would make my mom do it. Now I am fine though. Just make sure you go to a woman cashier. My trick to hiding them while walking through the store was to wear a sweatshirt, carry a small shopper basket, take my sweatshirt off and put it in the basket with the tampons to hide them better. Chances are people won't notice anyway though. It just feels really awkward! hahaha.

My first and only favorite brand of tampons is Tampax Pearl. I had no problems putting them in for the first time. There are instructions inside the box which helps a lot. They say to relax and put one leg up. Personally, I just kind of squat down. You will know as soon as you have it in. If it helps, practice with a tampon so you can get used to the applicator. Its intimidating at first, but it is so easy!I hate pads so much because they leak and they smell bad. Plus they are uncomfortably bulky for me. I prefer tampons definitely. You can leave them in for up to 8 hours. They dont smell, they dont hurt, and they dont leak (unless you have a super heavy period, but I doubt you do yet.) At night time, I would keep a small towel under you (just in case.) I never wear tampons to bed because usually you sleep more than 8 hours. I buy specific overnight pads by Always. I also use toilet paper as a back up if my period is really heavy. Tampons and pads are pretty expensive. You can buy the store brand though which is generally cheaper and a similar product. Always buy way more than you would think you need. Always have extras with you and never be afraid to ask to use the bathroom. Just say its an emergency and they probably wont question it. But always take the time when you get a restroom break to check to make sure youre not leaking or change your tampon if you know you wont get the chance later on. If you leave your tampon in for more than 8 hours you are at risk for TSS. Which is a rare disease that has been linked to misuse of tampons. Dont let it scare you though! If you get cramps, have some aleve or advil on hand (and a water bottle) Take it as soon as you feel a little discomfort and it wont be as bad. also, drink lots of water. It sounds silly, but it really does help.

Anyway, good luck. Hopefully this helps!

i recommend Always Pads. I've had the same problem as you had when i was like 12. it is nothing to be embarrassed about, being active actually slows down your blood flow, now being in the sauna i would take a tampon, but only for that. always wear a pad to bed, and be sure you just don't sleep on your back. Snow is awesome, you don't need anything special for snow, sweetie I'm 18 and i think tampons suck. GOOD LUCK!Health Question & Answer

well what i would do is to get some long pads, i always get the always brand and for tampons, i get the playtex sport. And if you get the long kid of pads you wont leak. and you should be fine in the sauna. If something happens, then just go change your clothes.Pads and tampons are not too expensive, but if you have to get em, you hav to get em. And if you see your Friends at target, just say hey whats up and dont say anything more. But dint be embarrassed. Dont worry about it too much. Just go and have fun. Let me know how it works out!Health Question & Answer

get pearl !!Health Question & Answer

ask ur mom about the tampon, i had my period at 11. And she really helped me! I reccomend Kotex brands for pads. Health Question & Answer

take your time, don't tense up and relax. Use the smallest tampons you can find. I love tampax peril lights with plastic applicators. they slide in so easily. Just be sure to change the tampon every 4-8 hours.

I would recommend not wearing a pad in a sauna. Especially if you are wearing a bathing suit. The blood might get warm and smell bad. wear a tampon if you can.

As for at night, wear a pad. It keeps you safe from TSS.

who cares if someone sees you buying tampons or pads, they will get their period some day too. Just smile and say "hi :) "

It really depends on what brand you buy.
tampons; $3-7
pads; $2-6
liners; $1-4

And exercises actually helps cramps.
so don't worry about that haha

good luck and have fun!!Health Question & Answer

Im 12 2. I been got my period 2 years ago. Anyway, If you want to use tampons then u should talk 2 ur mom about tampons. If u rather perfer pads then, u should use kotext. It has wing and it has a size if u have light or thick periods. All the stores have them. They cost about $1-3 a pack. They also have on the go pads and tampons and u r able to go swinmming and do ur normal things u like 2 do. Ask ur camp conselor about any medicine for cramps or some hot tea will work 2! If u leak on the bed the 1st night then just change ur sheets or was ur sheets by hand and put on a pad or insert a tampon. Before u use a tampon, make sure u insert it right so u won't tear or bust ur cheery lol! WELCOME 2 BECOMING A WOMAN!

When I'm in the store buying pads, I don't care what people think, it's normal for girls to do that. I went to Creation Fest this year and I had my period the whole time. I recommend "Always" for pads. That's what I use. And I'm 13. Try Tampons BEFORE you go to camp, so you can see how they feel. If you like them what I would do it wear a small tampon at night(i think they make some for nighttime) and wear a pad just in case. And if you don't wear a Tampon, Keep your legs together while you sleep. I always stained the bed till I did that. You can probably wear a pad in the snow. But I wouldn't take a chance with the sauna, wear a tampon. And you can tell a Counselor, they have probably done it b4. But tell a teenage girl. I know pads cost about 5-6 dollars where I get them. Hope I helped!Health Question & Answer
