What type of Doctor should my wife see first for light abdominal pains (2wks now)?!

Question: What type of Doctor should my wife see first for light abdominal pains (2wks now).?
More facts:
She is 60 y/o
Pain is centered just below the breast bone.
Her stools also have become very dark
She also wants to have a colonoscopy done

Should she start with a Gastroenterologist.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Yes, gastro. I was a gastro RN for years. She is at the age to be scoped, however the dark stools need to be tested for blood. But, yes a gastro is the place where you want to be. I'm not sure who your insurance is with, some companies require you to see your primary 1st then they refer you to a gastro. Check your plan guidelines.Health Question & Answer

don't mean to be harsh, but why would you ask a .? like that on a website.?you need to take her to the doc your regular doctor would be a good place to start.if he or she feels more tests have to be done im sure they"ll let you no!!! again don't mean to be harsh!! i waited with health issues and ended up going to surgery for a problem 4 years now the problems may be back!!! PLEASE take her in !!!!! my problems were not like your wife's but you need to have them addressed.Health Question & Answer

Better start with a GP and let him refer to a specialist if he thinks fit. If the pain is on the right side below the breast bone it can be due to swelling of the liver.I hope her eating habits have not changed in the immediate past.Best wishesHealth Question & Answer

A gastroenterologist could certainly do a colonoscopy. She might have an ulcer or stomach problem. She should get in as soon as she can - even if that means going to your regular, primary care doctor. That will speed up the whole process.Health Question & Answer

i have had the same thing now for a year and i cannot get in to see a gastroenterologist until the middle of next year so take her to your doctor to get the ball rolling.goodluck i hope she is starting to feel better soonHealth Question & Answer

Sounds like it could be an ulcer. Start with a general practitioner.Health Question & Answer
