anytime you have unprotected sex you can get pregnant especially if your not on birth control or your not taking them right, the best thing to do is to take them everyday and try not to forget, and dont have unprotected sex sweetie your only 14, use condoms and have safe sex, because bith control doesnt prevent STD's and AIDS and STI's, so be careful when you do get sexually activeHealth Question & Answer

This question is answered in your patient information pamphlet (which is included with EVERY package of pills). I recommend that you read it start to finish!

To answer your question, yes you'd still be protected. It might reduce efficacy slightly because the pill is (a) NOT 100% effective -- EVER, and (b) every time you screw up your pill cycle, you increase your chances of pregnancy.

So ... theoretically ... if you were to have sex under the outlined scenarios, I'd recommend that you use backup contraception (condoms) for seven consecutive days EVERY time there is a slip up. Better safe than sorry....theoretically.

EDIT - just as an FYI, the average efficacy of the pill is only about 95%, as opposed to the 99.99% you quoted. The high-end efficacy result (which is in reality only 98.9% in clinical studies) is only in place if it is used under precise clinical conditions (no misses, taken to the second exactly every single day, no interactive medications, no body weight fluctuations, no internal hormone anomalies, etc).
To answer your question, it would take SEVEN CONSECUTIVE non-missed, non-late days to bring the pill back to the average 95% efficacy.Health Question & Answer

Anytime your birth control is not taken as directed by your doctor you increase the risk of getting pregnant.Health Question & Answer
