When my daughters had cramps, it was very important that they took iburprofin of some kind at the very first sign that they were about to get their period, before the pain started, they also used heating pads.

This is not a great answer but if your trying to sleep and you can do it, try this. Get on your hands and knees and put your but in the air kind of like some babies sleep. This tips the uterus and can reveive the cramping as long as you are in this position.

Sleep always helps. Some really good hot tea always makes me feel somewhat better. A warm bubble bath is very relaxing. Rubbing your belly in gentle circles might help.
