Can PCOS be determined by external ultrasound and bloodwork only?!

Question: Can PCOS be determined by external ultrasound and bloodwork only.?
Ok, so my doctor wanted me to have an internal and external ultrasound done to diagnosis PCOS (I also had some bloodwork done as well). Even though I am a virgin, I was expecting to have both done and just grin and bear it, but when I got to the appt, when I told the tech I had never had sex, she quickly said "Oh, sweetie, then we're not doing that!" On one hand I was relieved, but thinking back now I am a little upset. Isn't a transvaginal ultrasound the only way to determine PCOS.? I don't want to have to go through that all again! I'm afraid that when I go back to the doctor next week for the results she will think that I was a baby about it and just chickened out and will not know how to treat me. Am I stressing about this too much, or will there be enough info for a diagnosis.?Health Question & Answer

No worries !!! Be grateful you have an understanding doctor who understood how important it was NOT to do the T/V ultrasound.

You can diagnose it by an external u/s as well so don't be concerned. Plus, most of the time doctors are unable to see a lot of cysts on the u/s, so most of the time they diagnose PCOS based on your bloodwork, and medical history.

NO she will not think that you are a baby, why would she/ She knows that doing a t/v ultrasound on a virgin is not acceptable, for many reasons. Plus, if she were to somehow think you're a baby and didn't want it, who cares.? If she's that immature then you'll need to find another doctor. Honestly though, I can almost guarantee that she will not care either way. You simply explain why the nurse or u/s tech decided against it.

Hope this helps,

Yes it can be determined by an external ultrasound, as well as with blood tests, i think the internal one is too invasive anywayHealth Question & Answer
