Is it just me or is this ridiculous?!

Question: Is it just me or is this ridiculous.?
My high school runs this program every fall were they call every student down to the nurse's office and have their height and weight recorded. A few weeks later you will be called down to recieve a letter saying what you are labeled as (underweight, normal, overweight, or obese) I understand that they are just trying to help keep kids healthy, especially with the growing obesity problem in our country, but I still think that weight is a sensitive issue that the schools shouldnt involve themselves in. It makes kids uncomfortable and should be left up to the their doctor...but that isn't even my issue with it.

My issue is that four times now I have been called down and given a lecture on eating disorders and body image problems WHICH I DON'T HAVE because I am tall and thin. And then a lettter is sent home to my parents and you have to bring it back signed by your pediatrician to prove that you went to the doctor and they say you are okay, or that they are going to deal with the problem. BUT THERE IS NO PROBLEM! i think this is completly ridiculous. I am 5'10" and weigh about 110-115 pounds. I know that that is reallly skinny but that is how i've always been, what am I supposed to do about it. I am happy healthy and full of energy. I play field hockey and tennis, get good grades, and eat very well. There is nothing that shows I have any kind of eating disorder yet I have to go through this silly routine every year. When I complain about it people are always like well, maybe you SHOULD gain some weight or whatever. Sooo annoying. I look fine and feel fine and honestly, I probably eat MORE than i should, if anything lol.

Does anyone else think that is reallllly ridiculous.? My mom has called the school about it several times because the school nurse harasses me over it. Once last year I was sick and went to the nurse to call my mom and go home and she said something snarky along the lines of "maybe if you ate more you wouldn't get sick so easily."

This unfair and wrong, right.?.?!.?!!.?!Health Question & Answer

That is horrible. They should not be able to treat you like that or make you feel bad about the way you are shaped. Of course I can see the good intentions behind the problem but it is clearly going to far. Your parents need to have a serious conversation with the school. This isn't fair to your or other students eitherHealth Question & Answer

It is unfair, wrong and NOT Right. But that what happens when we allow the government to get more involved in our lives. I'm a teacher and I don't like it any more than you do. It all falls back on personal responsibility.Health Question & Answer

That is REALLY wrong. Call a lawyer for some advice. They should not be making you feel like this about your body! I had a doctor once tell me I was overweight. I am 5'9" and 145lbs. I feel and look healthy. I switched doctors.Health Question & Answer

The theory is good but it's embarassing if you have weight issues. It's really none of the schools business in my opinion. I am a little overweight myself and I am perfectly healthy. Health Question & Answer

What are they going to do.? Restrict your eating.?.? Its pointless and if my school tried that id tell them to f*** off.

They have no reason to tell you how you should eat. Its not their business. Your there to learn. Health Question & Answer

Absolutely. I can't believe that schools are doing things like this - its just going to end up making everyone feel bad about themselves! You have a slim body type and there is nothing wrong with that.Health Question & Answer

Wow...that IS ridiculous!

By any chance do you happen to live in a southern town.? Or a town that has a southern mind-set.? That would explain a lot... Health Question & Answer

I would ask you mom to talk to a lawyer about this. This is discriminating and harassing. You shouldn't have to go through this.Health Question & Answer

Threaten to sue the school and they will drop it.Health Question & Answer

yeah that is wrongHealth Question & Answer

ABSOLUTELY wrong! Schools do have an ability to limit some of your rights (hence, dress codes, and locker checks), but there are some things that they cannot do.

Personally, I think you have a case against the school board, and should seek legal assistance. Seems like a severe invasion of privacy, particularly without proof of any abuse or other eating disorders.

Be sort of like putting black and hispanic kids in remedial classes, just because they think such kids inherently have learning disabilities.

Health Question & Answer

Is it that BMI crap.?
I KNOW
It's ridiculous!

My friend Cris is a football player, so he's got insane muscles
Even though there is virtually no fatty spots on him, they labeled him as overweight because the weight of his muscles

D:<
It's stupid

You just have a high metabolism
If you eat normally, and you exercise, then of course you're gonna be thin
And some girls are just narually skinnier than others
It's unfair that they would bug you about it if you feel perfectly healthy

I totally agree.
Besides
Weight is a personal thing, I don't htink it's fair that schools should bother people about it like they doHealth Question & Answer

I honestly think that your school is WAY too invasive. I remember when I was in school this would be thought of as a waste of learning time as well as a waste of resources.

Anyway, to answer your question about what to do... Here's what I would do. I would have your mother write a letter to the principal of the school in regards to the harassment of it, and possibly excluding you from these little tests they're running. If that doesn't result in a solution for you, your next avenue is always the school superintendent as well as the school board. I don't know how aggravating this is to you, but I would have been upset had I been told I had an eating disorder because I was thin. It was always chalked up to a high metabolism when I was in school.

Well, good luck with your situation.Health Question & Answer

Get a doctor's note from a properly qualified Doctor saying there is nothing wrong with you. Next time the nurse makes a sarky remark, explain that when you want advice on your health you go to someone with 5 years medical college behind them not the professional head louse checker ('nit-nurse') from the education department.Health Question & Answer

My primary school actually did this as a study. They recorded the heights and weights of kids and then checked their body to see how they were developing. If we wasn't in the right weight group with our height then they would send a letter like they're doing to you. They wanted to do pelvis exams and what not but they can't by law touch you. Then they did it again in jr high and I hated it. Every 9 weeks we had it done to see if we went up or down. I'm 5'10" liek you and I am overweight. I'm healthy though but I just have some meat on my bones. So they send a letter home and all that. They wasn't as strict as you were but my mom sent a letter to the schoolboard. A few of my friends parents did the same thing but they still did it so it obviously didn't make that big of a difference. Then whenever I went to high school they stopped doing it. The only thing I get weighed for now is to give blood and that's understandable.

If I were you I would seriously look into some legal counsels, like other people mentioned. If your parents do not think you have an eating disorder and you have been to your doctor several times and they said you're in the right weight range then they should leave you alone. I personally think you're thin but there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of females are thin and perfectly healthy. They shouldn't judge you by your waist size.

Good luck! Health Question & Answer

Well. I can see where the school would be doing that to prevent eatting disorders or obesity. But I agree that it is uncalled for the nurse to say such catty remarks. I'm also 5'10 and weigh 126-128.. which is about 10lbs more than you but trust me, I still get the "you are too skinny" all the time. I think the only thing going for me is I have boobs haha (34 d).which makes me look bigger.. but to take this question to a total 180... have you ever though about modeling.? Anyways--- I'm not sure what to do with your school but just to ignore it. They are probably jealous lolHealth Question & Answer

Was the nurse over Weight.?lol-----I do see where after awhile it could get annoying-Maybe you need to get a note from your doctor and make a copy to keep and then have the school put it on file.
Perhaps one of your parents will havr to make a personal trip to school if it continues.Health Question & Answer
