Does anyone want to recommend their way of treating PMT? ?!

Question: Does anyone want to recommend their way of treating PMT.? .?
was researching it on the net and saw that evening primrose, magnesium and vitamin e are all helpful.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
There is extensive research showing that neither evening primrose nor its active ingredient Gamolenic acid or Vitamin E are of any use at all in PMS. There is also some specific and recent work showing that vitamin E supplements are linked inexplicably with early death by 4%, ( and vitamin A increases it by 11%!) The evidence suggests it would be safer to obtain the chemicals not as supplements but by eating plenty of fruit and vegetables.

There is a small amount of positive data to suggest magnesium is useful.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been shown to have some useful effects and is non-toxic in normal doses. Currently however it is only available in doses of 10 mgs. 50-100 mgs is suggested for PMS, this dose is prescription only. In much higher doses however it is known to cause peripheral neuropathy, so care must be taken here also.

The next 2 medications shown to be statistically helpful are norithisterone and the combined pill. Currently fluoxetine, controlled-release paroxetine, and sertraline are the only Food and Drug Administration-approved agents for this indication. Some studies also show that the diuretic spironolactone, also or in combination with an SSRI is also of benefit.

Evening primrose oil is supposed to be good for helping with breast discomfort. Although there is limited research supporting this.

Vitamin B6 is sometimes beneficial too. This vitamin is part of our normal diet, but extra amounts are thought to help with PMS. However, there is only limited research evidence that it works, it is still worth a try.

You can take the vitamin tablets either in the two weeks before your periods, or every day. Do not take more than the recommended dose (and definitely no more than 100 mg daily) as too much vitamin B6 can be harmful.

If your PMS is really horrendous, as a last resort the pill can be considered (In theory, preventing ovulation should help PMS). There is a release of progesterone into the bloodstream after ovulation, this seems to trigger symptoms of PMS. However because pills contain progestogen hormones (with a similar action to progesterone) the pill is not always helpful with PMS. There is a pill called Yasmin and it contains a progestogen called drospirenone which does not seem to have the downside of other progestogens. I believe this pill is beneficial for people with PMS, if you require contraception as well, you might find this is an option.

In some cases SSRI's can be considered. Spironolactone can be used if you have water retention. Have a chat with your GP if your finding it hard to cope. Don't suffer in silence.

Many women including myself, find that exercise is of great help. also try to have an understanding of whats happening. This can relieve some of the anxiety about symptoms.Health Question & Answer

Warm baths, hot water bottles to the affected area, general painkillers (paracetamol, ibuprofen, if these don't work, see if your local chemist can give you something else) and lots of chocolate (makes you feel happier). I have found taking pain killers with a hot drink like tea makes them work quicker too.Health Question & Answer

Herbal remedies will certainly help your PMT but a trained practitioner should be consulted before you begin taking herbal medications so you get the dosage right.
