i just started taking birth control about two weeks ago, and i have no clue how it works. im taking it for health reason, not for the sex part (well thats a plus) and i just wanted to know how it works.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Birth control pills suppress ovulation by releasing synthetically prepared hormones, progestin and (sometimes) estrogen. The levels of hormones depends on the individual prescriptions. The hormones travel through the bloodstream to the pituitary gland, where they cancel the production of the LH and FSH hormones. Without these hormones, you cannot ovulate, and therefore you cannot get pregnant. However, to stay healthy, your uterus still needs to shed its lining, which is why you take a week of placebo pills and have a period, although with a combination (progestin and estrogen) pill, the periods will be shorter and lighter.Health Question & Answer

The pill releases a hormone in your brain that controls when you ovulate. If you are taking it for health reasons, it is most likely not strong enough to keep you from getting pregnant. Ask your doctor about the strength. Health Question & Answer
