There are many causes of anaemia. By far the most common cause, especially in women of child bearing age is iron deficiency anaemia due to blood loss during menstruation (periods). Most women can be anaemic and not notice, though those that do experience symptoms of faintness, dizzyness, breathlessness should take iron supplements to restore iron levels.

Anaemia means "lack of blood" and occurs when the blood is not forming properly. Iron is a key component of red blood cells so if you are iron deficient you do not have enough iron to make enough red blood cells.

Other causes of anaemia are B12 or folate deficiency. These are also key in the creation of red blood cells. This is less common however as most people get enough of these supplements in the diet. It can occur in alcoholics, pregnancy, pernicious anaemia, and GI diseases such as chron's.

Anaemia can also be caused by increased break down of red blood cells. This usually occurs in blood disorders such as thalassaemia and sickle cell disease but can occur in diseases like malaria (an infection of red blood cells)

Finally, anaemia can be caused by diseases affecting the bone marrow which is where red blood cells are made in the first place. Conditions such as leukaemia cause dysfunction of the marrow and can cause various deficiencies in cells, including red blood cells.

Anyway, your anaemia is likely due to menstruation. To combat this, take regular iron supplements for several months and increasing your dietary iron intake (red meats and leafy green vegetables). You can reduce the heaviness of your periods by taking a hormonal contraceptive or tranexemic acid.

If you are not menstruating, you should have your anaemia investigated as it may be being caused by any of the conditions mentioned above. Health Question & Answer
