Please help me. Hearing problems and i literally make a fool of myself?!?!

Question: Please help me. Hearing problems and i literally make a fool of myself.?!.?
I am 18 and have noticed for a long time now that I have trouble hearing people speak, especially when in a noisy place or with a number of people speaking at the same time. I have also noticed that i can hear very high pitched noises very easily. It is the low sounds that i jumble up. I make responses to questions and people look at me wierd! then when i get them to repeat what they said, i get soo embarrassed.

What could be causing this.?
I heard once of my aunt having to get her tonsils removed because they were imparing her hearing. Could it be the same with me.?

I just find it strange because i can still hear high pitched things - like polyphonic ringtones when the phone owner cant hear them from the other room where we are sitting together. Health Question & Answer

Hearing loss can affect only the conversational frequencies, which is what it sounds like is happening to you. Inside the ear, there are receptors that are tuned to a specific Hz, and thats the only one they respond to. If you damage enough of the receptors for the 1000 - 4000Hz region, then hearing voices would be affected, and hearing in others would not. If you have been a big fan of ear buds and headphones, you may have done this. The first step is to see an audiologist and actually have your hearing tested to find out what or if there is a problem. Once they determine if there is a problem, it's easier to find a solution, or at least help prevent any more loss. The major cause of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise, or by concentrating the noise in the ear such as with ear buds. And unfortunately, sometimes the loss is permanent. If you do tend to use these items, stop immediately. Cut the level of the noise around you to nothing higher than ordinary conversation level and indulge in periods of quiet as much as you can. It may simply be fatigue of those hearing receptors, and with a bit of rest you may recover a good bit. However, get your hearing tested professionally as well. You do not have to go deaf - either from age or from noise damage. Ears were designed to last a lifetime with care.Health Question & Answer

Please go get your hearing tested. It's not normal for you to hear only certain sounds and not others; the hearing issue makes it seem like a communication problem to others, so please go get it checked out so you'll know for sure what it could be.Health Question & Answer
