Gyno appointment tips?!

i always get extreeeeemely nervous when going to the doctor.
even just the thought of visiting my regular doctor makes me feel uneasy.

today i have an appointment at the gyno for the first time to get a pap smear and get started on birth control.

Just concentrate on your breathing not your pap during the procedure, take deep breaths (count to 5 on inhale and 5 on exhale) and it should help you relax. Otherwise you will be concentrating on the procedure and probably hold your breath and that makes you tense up even more.

It's done in no time!

After 20 years of pap smears I can tell you that it is never something that gets comfortable but we still have to do it and it's always no big deal once it's over!

I'll say a prayer for you!!

I always concentrate on my breathing, really slow and deep while it's going on.

I used to always ask for a woman as that made me feel better and less uncomfortable considering where the fingers and equipment were going. Now I prefer men because I have had more gentle experiences with men than with women. Some docs are kind of rough and it can hurt; some docs are so gentle you are surprised to find out they are done already.

If it's a first time, ask your mom/ friends/ cousins for a recommendation to a doc or nurse practitioner that makes them feel comfortable. I'm 30 and I'll still ask coworkers if they know of a good one. Women share that kind of thing because we all have to go there and comfort and trust are important.Health Question & Answer

It doesn't matter how often you go to a gyno you are going to be nervous. I have had cervical cancer, been on IVF, had a child and a hysterectomy. At times it felt like every gyno on earth had examined me I still felt uncomfortable. A pap smear shouldn't hurt like hell, it shouldn't hurt at all its more annoying. Make a conscious effort to think about something else but it will be hard. Just remember you need to do it and once its done its done and next time wont be so nerve wracking but its never going to be 'fun' thats normal.Health Question & Answer

Never been through it myself, so I can only suggest some ways of distraction.

Try to relax - it'll be painful if you don't.

Try singing in your head, just think of the lyrics etc. Or just imagine something (ie. Make up your own story/ what you want to do in future etc. Dream basically)
Or just reminisce about something or other.

Hopefully it'll be over & done with before you know it!

no its not sore, just uncomfortable. and remember, the dr has done 1000s of these exams, so dont be embarrased. Take a deep breath, and think of something else during the exam. also- be totally honest with your dr, even if you want to talk about something really personal.Health Question & Answer

You need to find a really good GYNO. A good gynecologist will make you feel comfortable, will take it slow and tell you what he/she is doing. I may be sexist, but I prefer a female. I feel they understand and I am just more comfortable with them. If you are relaxed, it is not bad at all! Try to carry on a conversation so you are distracted!Health Question & Answer

find a spot on the ceiling and just stare at it... thats how i get through it!! It will be pretty "uncomfortable'' but its over before you know it... bring some gum to smack on too...
you will have to be in a cup and they always prick my finger and ask the same normal questions...Health Question & Answer

it's never a comfortable experience but so important! it doesnt hurt at all!! i always just stare at the ceiling and pretend im somewhere else and soon enough it's over! it'll be ok, good luck!Health Question & Answer
