How do you know if you are becoming depressed?!

Question: How do you know if you are becoming depressed.?
I've been stressing out about everything from school to family matters. Some are telling me I'm just menstrual, but it is ALL the time and I've never been moody or emotional around the time of my period. I'm only 20 and the doctors are telling me my chances at kids are not good. My brother and me are not very close anymore and we are only a year and 2 days apart and grew up like twins. He's been in college for over a year and when I call its like I'm interrupting him. My boyfriend just moved in with me a few months ago and sometimes I feel out of place there. I'm going through physical therapy because I was injured in July 2008. I just can't seem to catch a break. I just want to sleep, my appetite is up and down, and things that would usually make me really happy, I'm just so so about. I've always been the strong one, so I always try to brush everything off so no one sees me weak. Does this sound like depression and what can I do.?Health Question & Answer

well it is sounding like depression to me, you dont want to become fully depressed, life is no fun like that way and you want to die. hopefully you will not get severely depressed. hold on before you go to a doctor and get on some legal dope. write down what might be making you emotional, stressed, tense, depressed in your life. try a to find a solution about those things, try to change what you can change that you dont like, what you cant change, accept it, compromise, there are causes for depression, its a trigger that things are not right, you dont have to go to the psychiatrist and get dope that is for people who cannot cope anymore and they have gone over the stage where there will will is just done or they cant change anythign anymore its too late or people have passed away they have nothing, they need to not feel and forget. medication should not be the first step cure for depression/sadness, try talking to someone, human touch is the best medication for depression, maybe you are lonely, most people are lonely my speech teacher told me that, its true they are , they dont show it. but it hurts them you can see it, i am so lonely sometimes, i caught myself talking to myself, i was about to go to a random person and tell them how lonely i am and how no one has talked to me all day but i didnt i was afraid what they will t hink and they probably will call security on me, anyways oh well. take care and dont forget meHealth Question & Answer

You have a lot of factors that could potentially be contributing to depression; being sick and inactive can definitely trigger it, as can being in a relationship that doesn't make you feel good. We sometimes have to learn to cultivate positive feelings to counter the negative ones that follow negative experiences. Often, by the time you notice how crappy you feel you are in a place where you need help to change your patterns and get back to feeling OK.

Find a way to see a therapist. Talk to a counselor at school, or see your regular doctor to talk about what you are feeling. We live in a very complicate world that can be difficult to navigate; our brains are not always ready for the range of things we encounter in contemporary life. We can trick our brains in a few different ways though. Moderate exercise and proper nutrition with lots of B vitamins are two ways to get your chemistry on track when you feel in a rut. But if this is your first episode of depression it is really going to do a lot of good to talk to a professional about what you are experiencing and how to proceed.Health Question & Answer

Some of your symptoms are classic signs of depression: loss of interest in your usual activities and sleeping a lot. You can find help if you're feeling down. A doctor (preferably a psychiatrist) can give you medication to help you feel better. A psychologist or clinical social worker can guide you through "talk therapy" so you can figure out how to deal with some difficulties you're having: your brother pulling away from you, your mixed feelings about your boyfriend.
Feeling depressed is not a sign of weakness. It could be a chemical imbalance, or it could be you're dealing with some big issues and could use some help in solving them.
It takes courage to recognize when you can't go it alone and to reach out for help. Avoiding the issues is just running away from them, and they may just get worse.
Please seek help. You'll be glad you did. You'll see. Things will get better (though it may take some time).

As a psych student, it does sound like situational depression. I have suffered through it as well, and it is not fun. I highly suggest going to see a therapist, it's embarrassing and awkward, but it really does help. Talk to your doctors and tell them that you are generally struggling with this, and if you have a good doctor, they will recommend you to a therapist and if your therapist agrees, you can talk to your doctor about starting on a low dosage of an anti-depressant.

You also seem to be very stressed out, which can lead to depression.

I was prescribed Zoloft a year ago and it has helped so much. My anxiety level is significantly lower and my depression seems to be almost absent. Just talk to your doctor, and they should understand!

Stay positive! Things do get better!
