Question: Can being on the pill for a long time harm you.?
I've been on the pill for several years with no break, can that be harmful.? Will it make it more difficult to get pregnant when I stop.? Should I take a break.?Health Question & Answer

I've also been on the pill for several years and myself was concerned. I went to the doctor and the advice they gave me was that every time you go they check your blood pressure and weight to check they have not been affected. The pills main risks are to those who are smokers, have high blood pressure, a family history of certain cancers, are overweight and to those with family history of certain other issues (the likes of early onset of diabetes, heart disease etc). every time you go to the doctors/clinic to get a repeat prescription of the pill they should check these things over with you and if there are any issues which may cause you problems they should inform you that it may be better to use a different form a contraception.
Some research suggests that using the pill for long periods of time can slightly increase the risks of certain forms of cancers, but it also reduces the risks of other forms too - it is only a slightly increased chance/
On regards to getting pregnant when you stop taking the pill it may take a few months to conceive as all the hormones from the pill will effect your ovulation for a few months, but providing your fertility is ok naturally it should not affect you at all long term.
I'd say to be totally clear you should either make an appointment with your doctor or discuss these issues next time you go to get a pill prescription. good luck:)Health Question & Answer

Not unless you want to take a break. Whether or not it makes it more difficult for you to get pregnant will depend on your own body - I have known of women that get pregnant right after they stop, and yet others take a little or a lot longer.
Being on the pill with no break for a long time has not been proven to be harmful - unless you smoke. If you smoke, being on the pill increases your risk of developing blood clots. Research is mixed on whether or not it increases your risk of breast cancer; as of right now, if you pill dose is low, it is very unlikely that it will increase the risk. One thing to consider is that the pill is proven to reduce the risk for uterine and ovarian cancers, so that's actually an advantage about it.
For more info, you should talk to your OB-GYN.Health Question & Answer

i would recommend taking a break yes - your body can become too 'used to it' and i ve known people who find it really difficult to get pregnant when they ve been on the pill for ages.
just take a short break - a month or 2, then start again. it makes a big difference!
