You ovulate 14 days before the first day of your period, so you really don't know when you have ovulated until you have started your period. BUT, if you are regular, you can guess, when you should start, and go from there. Ovulation is your fertile time, there is a 72 hour window when you are ovulating, and if you have sex before that time, for up to 48 hours, the sperm can live, and you can still get pregnant. You SHOULD be okay a week before expected period, but if on the off chance you would get you period a little late, you could hit it on the ovulation or fertile mark. As a general rule you ovulate 14 days before the beginning of menstruation. So no matter how long your cycle there is your ovulation. Sperm can, theoretically survive for up to 7 days after ejaculation and eggs for 5 days after they are released from the ovary. So do the maths and yes you can get pregnant a week before your period
