The baby's lungs are normally developed at this stage. The baby should be fine. She will be put into an incubator where she will be cozy, warm and admired! And if she's ready, she will even breastfeed. The doctor's and nurses will ensure she is well taken care of.

They say anything 36 weeks gestation or later should be fine. Did her water break.? She is not even fully effaced and needs to get to 10 cm dilation. If it is nothing they can stop(contractions), then she may have the baby soon. I was 3 cm dilated for 3 weeks before my water broke.I am sure the baby will be just fine. The baby should be fine. While 9 months is technically 40 weeks, a baby is full term at 38 weeks. So, 36 weeks is only 2 weeks early. If this is your niece's first pregnancy it could be a few days until the baby is born. Health Question & Answer
