Heavy bleeding and I need help. Has anyone gone through this or can give me some direction?!

Question: Heavy bleeding and I need help. Has anyone gone through this or can give me some direction.?
I was having heavy periods to the point I ablation rely have a life. The clotting was horrible. It would take the long, super duty pads and a super plus tampon to manage it for an hour before I would have to change it. I have gone to my dr. and he said uterine ablation or I get a depo provera shot. I opted for the shot. Basically the other was I have uterus lining burned off. He said that the shot should make my periods go away all together. After I got the shot my periods stopped but three weeks ago they came back and have been there ever since. It has not been very heavy but today I started cramping so bad that it really scared me. I think my doctor is just giving me the brush off. I am really scared and I don't know who I should see since my insurance requires my doctor sign off on them. I am hoping someone could give me real information about what is going on with me and what I should be looking for. I am scared about burning the inside of my uterus. I am scared. What if I have cancer.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You are progesterone deficient. Try replaceing Progesterone, BIOIDENTICAL only, NOT "progestins" which cause cancer.

Get your Progesterone levels checked on the 21st day of your cycle - that means 21 days after the start of your period.

You may have fibroids or endometriosis, neither of these are cancer, but both are caused by a lack of progesterone, and both cause massive clots and bleeding.

Progesterone enables the uterus to hold onto its lining. A lack of Progesterone results in a uterus unable to hold onto its lining and constantly shedding, creating large clots and heavy bleeding. This is why Bioidentical progesterone is used as a treatment for women who have miscarriages.

Here is an article on the difference between bioidentical and synthetic Progesterone:

Your doctor can prescribe it for you, in pill form it is called Prometrium. http://www.prometrium.com/

You can order bioidentical Progesterone over the internet as well, in crem form. The normal dosage is 20 mg. cream every 12 hours. That's about 1/4 teaspoon. Here is one place to get it:

If you do not want to do this, or are discouraged from it by your doctor, then you can see if an IUD will help, such as Mirena. Again, this uses synthetic Progesterone called "Progestins", however, which do cause cancer.

The Depo Provera shot is pure evil. It messes up every woman who has ever had it, just about. Your doctor is pretty brain dead if he suggested that to you. It does EXACTLY what it did to you, and not only that, periods seldom if ever return to normal after having one of these shots. Horrible, horrible.

If you do not want to have your Progesterone checked and go on bioidentical Progesterone - which most doctors will not prescribe because they are ignorant - then this leaves you with several choices. You can have a hysterectomy. You can have an ablation done. You can have a D&C to scrape out your uterus, but this will not prevent future heavy bleeding.

In the meantime do not eat soy products. These mimic estrogen. Estrogen dominance (when your Progesterone levels are lower than your Estrogen, and guaranteed yours are), will cause heavy periods, clotting, hemorrhaging. STAYAWAY FROM SOY. And that includes in ALL food you eat, there is soy in crackers, there is soy in just about everything so be sure to check ingredients before buying anything.

Don't be scared you have cancer. Chances are excellent that you do not. Get your yearly pap exam, and this will calm your mind about that.

You've describe CLASSIC low-Progesterone symptoms, very common.

also be aware that if you are overweight, your fat cells are little factories for producing Xenoestrogens, which again, mimic estrogen in the body, causing heavy bleeding, etc. So if you are overweight, get RID of it.

Other than that, you can get a uterine ablation. There are several methods, the safest being the water method which can be done as an outpatient at the doctor's office. There is the balloon method as well, but this doesn't always provide complete coverage of all areas inside the uterus like the water method does. Try not to get the heat method or the freezing method or the roller method, these have more complications such as perforations, etc.

Being on the Pill will often control those types of periods also. again though, this is Progestins, synthetic progesterone, not the real thing. This does work though, but first the bleeding has to be stopped, and that might require a D&C which is just a scraping out of the uterus, has to be done under general anasthesia.

Do NOT get the Depo Provera shot, ever again.

Don't freak out, this is a problem that CAN be fixed, ok.? Just take a deep breath and try to relax. If you are going through more than one pad an hour you need to get to an emergency room and tell them that you are hemmorhaging though, ok.? You may need a blood transfusion, and the bleeding has got to be stopped.

Many of us out here have gone through this, and we survived it fine. you'll be ok too, really you will, so just don't panic.

Here is some information about ablation and the different types. Hopefully your doctor is competent to do them, if not, find one who is.

You need see a gynecologist. Most insurance companies will allow one "Well Woman Exam" per year without a referral. Otherwise just tell your doctor that you would like to have a referral to go to a GYN. If he wont give you one than change doctors. I'm sure he will not mind sending you to a specialist, he should, it's his job.

Many women have heavy, strange periods but you still need to be sure that there is nothing going on causing them to be so heavy. Many times birth control pills work better for less painful, lighter periods than Depo does.

Have you had a pap smear, that it what detects cancer. If it was normal I'm sure that you are fine as far as cancer goes.

Here is some information for you...

What causes heavy bleeding.?

If your periods have changed, it's very important to see your doctor. There are a number of diseases which can cause heavy bleeding (see list below). The doctor will investigate possible causes and offer the appropriate treatment. But in about half the women with heavy bleeding, no cause can be found.

Some causes of heavy menstrual bleeding-

Unexplained - for half of all cases no cause can be found.

Contraceptive coil (IUD) - the coil can cause heavier, longer periods.

Injectable contraception (Depo Provera) - can cause heavy or prolonged bleeding.

Pelvic disorders:
Fibroids - these benign (not cancerous) growths in the muscular wall of the uterus are a common cause of heavy bleeding.

Polyps - these benign growths of the lining of the uterus may cause heavy bleeding but more commonly lead to spotting between or after periods.

Pelvic inflammatory disease - an infection in the reproductive tract which can cause infertility and chronic pain if untreated.

Endometriosis - a painful condition in which the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

Endometrial hyperplasia - thickening of the lining of the uterus, leading to heavier bleeding.

Endometrial cancer - cancer of the lining of the uterus, causing heavy periods, bleeding between periods and blood-stained vaginal discharge. Rare, but more common in women after the menopause.

Blood and hormonal conditions-

Hormone imbalances - can stop ovulation (egg release) leading to build-up of endometrium and heavier periods.

Hypothyroidism - an underactive thyroid gland can cause heavier periods.

Blood clotting disorders.

Use of anticoagulant drugs.

The menstrual cycle is affected by stress. If you are going through any kind of life crisis, it is possible that your periods may settle down once that crisis has been resolved. Meanwhile reassurance from your doctor that there is nothing seriously wrong may help you to accept this change as a common and usually temporary response to stress. For many women, however, there is no easy solution to the stress in their lives. If this is the case, you will need to decide whether you want treatment for your heavy bleeding.

Health Question & Answer

i don't think you have cancer. however, if you're worried about it, see a gynecologist.
in fact, if i were you, i'd see a gynecologist either way.
i had a friend who used to get periods like that, and there was nothing wrong with her.
some people just get really heavy periods.
putting you on depo provera probably was a good idea in theory, as it is supposed to stop your periods completely, but that doesn't work for everyone.
i was on the needle before i had my son, and never got periods, but after i had him, i went on the needle again and my periods were all over the place.
if you're getting a whole lot of pain with your periods though, you might have something like endometriosis, or cysts on your ovaries.
if i were you, i would talk to a gynecologist about it.
good luck!Health Question & Answer

Don't panic...I strongly advise switching doctors. Get another opinion. also look into uterine fibroids too. They are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the uterus and cause heavy bleeding. I have 3 of them right now. If they get large enough..they may have to be removed surgically. But sometimes they shrink on their own. also pelvic inflammatory disease can be the cause too. I'm not trying to scare you, just trying to give info that can possibly help. Things to discuss with your doctor.Health Question & Answer
