I'm not getting the Gardasil vaccine?!

Question: I'm not getting the Gardasil vaccine.?
I'm 13, and have decided against getting the vaccine. Firstly, I'm not going to be having multiple sex partners anytime soon, or even one for that matter. As for cervical cancer, people have said it only lowers your risk slightly, so what's the point.? Nobody in my family has ever had cancer anyways, so I'm not worried.

What do you think.? Did you get it.? Are you getting it.?Health Question & Answer

Good choice. I am firmly against it because I believe it is too new - not enough long term studies have been done - and I feel that they lie about the facts to get more people to get it. From the commercials, they seem to make you think that if you get the vaccine, you'll magically never get HPV. However, they fail to tell you that you get HPV through having sex - something that I hope young girls aren't partaking in in the first place. Furthermore, numerous girls have died from the vaccine yet there is no news coverage or anything - it's ridiculous. All they care about is money. I may consider it in another ten years when it's been more carefully researched, but until then, I'm staying far away.Health Question & Answer

I think you're too young to make the choice now.

You might not want to have multiple sex partners, but your future partner may have had multiple sex partners. Such was the case with me.

Just because no one in the family has had cancer doesn't mean you won't.

Gardasil does protect against a lot of strains of HPV, maybe not all but a lot. Maybe it only lowers the risk of cervical cancer slightly, but it's just like sunscreen lowers the chance of you getting skin cancer slightly.

Don't make the decision now, just wait until you're 18 and start getting into serious relationships.

When I was 13 I didn't want kids or sex, but 9 years later things have changed.Health Question & Answer

First of all I would like to say its refreshing to see a young girl who is deciding to be responsible about sex and waiting until a responsible age to have intercourse!

Please keep in mind though it only takes ONE sexual partner to contract HPV virus and it is NOT a STI you can guard your self against by simply wearing a condom.

I have had it and I do think its a good idea because it helps protect you from getting the HPV virus which causes multiple reproductive issues not just cervical cancer!

Having the flu shot or a chicken pox vaccination only lowers your risk of getting those things but people still get them right.?.?

Just because there is no family history of cervical cancer doesnt mean that you are invincible and that it can't happen to you, there is a first time for everything!Health Question & Answer

I made the decision not to get it, either. It is VERY new, and I'd like to see more research first before I would consider getting it. also, I've only been with one person, and we are each others' first and only partners, so I'm not at risk for HPV.

It's a personal decision and you have every right to make it. Don't feel pressured to get it now - they say it's effective up until age 26 (of course, they recommend getting it prior to becoming sexually active or it may be a moot point) so you have plenty of time to see new research and studies and perhaps decide to get it later on.Health Question & Answer

Just so you know cervical cancer can happen to any women regardless of her sexual history and regardless of her family history. When you do become sexually active or the age of 18 which ever happens first you should get monthly pap smears, as they detect for cervical cancer, and you should have this done regardless if you have the Gardasil shot. Choosing to get the Gardasil shot is a personal choice. And you shouldn't base if off how many sexual partners someone has.Health Question & Answer

I think that is a personal choice. something can well be put off until you consider becoming sexually active. however know that "high risk" HPV can lead to cervical cancer. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease, there is no testing for HPV for men, but they can give it to females. low risk HPV is associated with genital warts, not cancer, but who wants those.?

Like I said before, it is a personal choice. Females can get the vaccine up till the age of 26, it is not something you need at this point anyway if you are not sexually active.

Health Question & Answer

I would NOT even consider NOT Getting the vaccine.

You are still too young to make a life changing decision such as this one..........passing on the vaccine.

It is now available. Many women who have died of cervical cancer, wished they could have had it in their lifetime, but it wasn't invented in their lifetime.
