It's probably normal for your body; I was in the same boat as you when I was about 15. Finally I got on birth control though because it helped with the amount of bleeding and cramps.

There are always possibilities that you have cysts which can cause really heavy bleeding, but some women just have heavy periods. If you're concerned I would see a doctor. If you feel uncomfortable telling your parents, you can go to a planned parenthood and they can prescribe you birth control. Health Question & Answer

Every girl is different. As you get older your period will probably get shorter and light, but it might not. It just depends.

As for not dreading it...When you figure that out can you let the rest of the female population know, I'm sure we would all like to stop dreading it!!Health Question & Answer

It could be normal for you to have a long heavy period. Or it could be a sign of a medical condition. I had a very heavy period when I was in middle and high school. Sometimes so heavy that it would bleed through a thick, long pad in less than one class period (I missed school because of it). I didn't have cramping at all until I got to high school. In college my cramps got worse and worse until I was taking a lot more advil in a day than I should and still hurting too much to function in life. My periods got longer and heavier. I had 2 days of my 10 day cycle that I coudln't do anything more than go to class, and I couldn't climb stairs to get there or my legs would feel like rubber bands and I'd get short of breath (from the anemia caused by my blood loss.) I dreaded my period!! I had extra sheets so I could change them in the middle of the night when I bled on them even through a towel. I couldn't wear tampons because I soaked them in less than an hour.

The day came that I took 11 advil in one day and still hurt too bad to function in life. I broke down and went to see the doc. We talked about birth control pills to control my flow. I was hesitant at first...it was the best thing ever. I bled the whole first month I was on pills, but very light, then my period got shorter and shorter. 7 days, then 5, now it's been 8 years and it's only 3 days and very light. I wear thin pads (that I never would have consdiered buying before) or tampons - for up to 8 whole hours. I don't even have emergency thick pads any more. The pill has truely been a blessing in my life.

The pain and bleeding are likely caused by endometrosis. I don't have the best understanding of it. In some cases it's totally harmless. It can cause all sorts of pains, like pain with sex or pain when you poop. It can cause scar tissue in your abdomen and could cause problems with getting pregnant, but for right now it just makes me so thankful for my short 3 day light periods.Health Question & Answer
