What form of birth control is the best?!

Question: What form of birth control is the best.?
What form of birth control is the best/safest.? I understand this subject may be a little touchy, but I really need some 'first hand' input. also, I know that this is something that everybody will have different opinions on, but I've read different things about both (and yes, have discussed them with my physician), and I need a little more first hand insight.

I've heard that 'the pill' can screw up your hormones and make you more at risk for breast cancer and cervical cancer (both of which I am already at risk for). I've also heard that an IUD can be great, but it can irritate the male (sometimes even be really painful)..... Then there are of course condoms - what is the percentage rate of getting pregnant by using them, and is it less enjoyable when wearing one.? A little help for the naive please!!!Health Question & Answer

I am going to try and answer all of your questions.

I have been on birth control for about 5 years now. I am using it to control my hormones and my period mainly. It has changed my life!

I take Yasmin. I have tried Yaz and it had negitive effects on me...but the good thing about birth control is that you can trial..test...and change it if you need to. Depending on what your using it for you would look for different things. I know that if you are only using it to prevent pregnancy you want to look for a low hormone type.

If you take the right kind it will NOT screw up your hormones...it should put them more in balance. "The pill" will not put you more at risk, and if you speak to your doctor about your worries he can give you the facts!

Birth control is 99.9% effective but "birth control" babies exist (usually because of antibiotics being taken)

Condoms are also 99.9% effective but are not a guarentee. Use a condom with spermicide in it! Thats what I do! It can be less enjoyable...but there are things you can do! Use A LOT of lubricant, especially a warming, or tingling senation causing kind. KY his and hers is pretty good (you just have to reapply a lot.) I use the KY warming jelly (off brand is just as good)

For best results get on birth control AND use condoms. Be extra careful right before and after your period.

And about the antibiotic thing I mentioned above if you take antibiotics while on the pill it will "cancel out" the birth control and you will be able to get pregnant. It will be like your not taking it at all.

I hope I was helpful!

Health Question & Answer

Condoms are about 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. They can numb the feeling for the man, but they generally don't change the feeling for a woman. Should you choose to use condoms, you can use the thin ones in order to make it more pleasurable for your partner. There are also injections that you can get once a month. They would not irritate the man, but I don't know if they can increase your risk of cervical cancer or breast cancer. Health Question & Answer

The best form of birth control is abstinence!!!
If you don't want something to mess with you hormones the best things are condoms. You can also try a cervical cap, spermicides or a sponge. An IUD is inside of your cervix, so I don't know how that could hurt the guy! But I'd go for a condom over that crap... It's the easiest and cheapest alternative... Sure it's a little less pleasurable but you know what's worse.? Having a baby unintentionally... or getting an STD. I think it's a 1% or 2% chance of pregnancy and that's because of human error.Health Question & Answer

Condoms are only around 85% effective. That percentage increases if you use a condom with spermicide (jelly or foam that kills sperm).
It will always feel better without a condom (for the guy and the girl), but childbirth does not feel good at all, and neither do STDs.
Birth control is the most effective at 99%, but I'm not on it either, because I'm skeptical as well about what it might do to my hormones.

I can't comment on the others but I had IUDs for over 10 years and despite lots of use, my husband never once complained. The thing he liked the best was we didn't have to use any other kind of back up bc and I didn't get pregnant.Health Question & Answer

I'm on the pill and it is working really well for me.
i'd try it if i was you.Health Question & Answer

Personally, I think that the pill is, hands down, the best option available. It can really mess with your hormones at first, but your body just needs some time to adjust to the pill, and if it is really unbearable, you can just change prescriptions. With the pill, you can't expect it to be perfect right off the bat, it takes some getting used to, but it is definitely worth it. The largest drawback, however, is that it doesn't protect you from STIs. But, if you are in a monogamous relationship where both of you are clean, then that shouldn't be a problem. I have heard about it heightening the risk for some cancers, but talk to your doctor about it and see what he/she says about that... I'm assuming that my doctor didn't think that the risk was that important since he gave me a prescription. However, if you are already at risk for those cancers, definitely talk it over with your doctor.

I never really considered the IUD as an option, but I have heard some horror stories from people who used that as a birth control method. In extreme cases, I know it can cause scarring in your fallopian tubes which can lead to a whole other range of problems (like ectopic pregnancy).

You could also look into options like a diaphragm or cervical cup. Diaphragms can work well when paired with spermicide -- you can insert it up to 2 hours before sex (any longer and the spermicide stops working), so you don't have to deal with any of the awkward pre-sex fumbling that comes with condom use. However, there is always the chance that a diaphragm can be dislodged during sex, and in that case you would have to use emergency contraception (morning after pill).

As for condoms, I really wouldn't recommend relying on them as a primary form of birth control. They can break, and you could be stuck in a tricky situation if the mood strikes you and you don't have a condom handy. The only good thing about condoms is that they protect you from STIs, but as I mentioned before, if you are in a monogamous relationship and both of you are clean, then you don't have to worry about that. (also, since you asked about the decrease of enjoyment, from personal experience I can tell you that while sex with a condom can feel good, it is definitely better without!)

All in all, my recommendation would be for the birth control pill. It is very easy to use, and can also have other good side affects (a better regulated and lighter period, and it can even help to clear up some acne problems). All you have to remember is to take one pill a day (and it's easy once you get into the habit) and you don't have to worry about the side affects of the IUD, or your diaphragm moving, or being caught without a condom. But if you are at a higher risk for those cancers, you should talk to your doctor first. also, if you aren't going to be having sex with one constant partner and there is a risk of STIs, then the condom is the best choice.

Hope that helped and good luck making a decision!Health Question & Answer

hiya!

i was in your position once when i was younger! not having a clue lol
i went on the pill which i found was good because you know exacly when your period will start and how long! and it makes your period light with no pains! only downside id remembering to take it everyday! and if your are sick or taking antibiotics then it will affect your pill and you will have to use condoms! plus side is the pill is known for reducing the risk of cervical cancer not causing it..... there is the injection that you get every 3 months that stops your periods all together but iv been told by people that the idea of that is wrong because the female body is designed to have a montly period so i would not say its a good thing not having them and on the injection if you decide to have a child and come off it then it could take up to a year for you to concieve!
hope this is some help to you!
