Answers:
It's really hard to gain weight. This is probably something that most people in the US can't relate to, but trust me, there are over a million people in the US like you - and me - who simply can't gain any weight. The skinny people who are overlooked by the American obsession to loose weight. So here are some notes from someone who, like you, tried very hard to gain weight before finally found a weight gain program that actually works.

The three main principles to gaining weight are eat, exercise, and sleep.

Eat Five Meals a Day

The idea is to add around 300 to 500 calories to your body every day. For hardgainers, it is a good idea to break your meals into five per day, instead of the usual breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eating frequently would allow your body to absorb more of the nutrients you take. But just as important as your calorie intake is the type of nutrients you're taking. This would determine what kind of mass you will gain. Now I understand that right now your main goal is simply to gain weight. But trust me, you want to gain muscles and not some flabby fat - you'd really regret it when you found yourself gaining some pounds but then realized when you look in the mirror that you're a skinny guy with a muffin top. So make sure you take in mostly carbs and protein. As a rule of thumb, you should aim for a ratio of around 35-40% carbs, 35-40% protein, and about 20-30% fat. The fat should come from mostly essential fatty acid - you can get them from avocado and olive oil.

Exercise

The kind of exercise you're looking for is a high intensity workout. It's the intensity, and not the amount, of exercise that will build your muscle. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes per workout, three times a week. Focus on exercises that employ multiple muscle groups at a time such as squat or bench press. Remember not to overdo it, since it would instead cost you your muscle growth. High amount of exercise is desirable when you want to loose weight, since you burn more calories. The exact opposite should be the goal for those who wish to gain weight. That's why you're supposed to aim for short-period high-intensity workouts. High amount of exercise would loose you the calories that could have been used to build muscle. Furthermore, too much exercise would make your muscles become unresponsive.

Sleep

Enough rest time to allow your body to recuperate is extremely essential for weight gainers. Again, you want to conserve your energy and calories, allowing them to build your muscles. Many people don't know that muscles are formed not during exercise but rather during rest time. That is why you need to be disciplined in terms of taking enough rest. An 8-hour sleep every day is just as crucial for weight gain as calorie intake and exercise, so make sure you take your sleep!

So there you go. That's the basic principles of gaining weight. If you want more information or a more comprehensive program, then find one. Simply taking supplements and protein shakes won't work; you need a program. Trust me, I've been there before. One last thing, you should understand that you want your body to take time to gain weight. You're aiming for 1 to 1.5 lbs of weight gain per week. So take it slow, but be persistent!
