I'm not getting one or anything, I've just always wondered. I see in movies they always make the woman look like she's in a lot of pain, I wonder if they do this to make it look more horrific.

Yes. The amount of pain/discomfort is related to the type of abortion. There's a type where you take a pill and then just have an abortion over the course of 3 days. During that time, you bleed insanely and have intense cramps (worse than anything that you'll ever have during a period).
I think that if you have a surgical abortion, you can be sedated. It will still hurt, though.
As a side note, embryos/fetuses don't feel pain during an abortion (unless it's extremely late-term which is illegal unless the health of the mother is at stake) because they don't have a developed nervous system. They can't feel pain at all. They're not even as advanced as fish... which can't feel pain either.Health Question & Answer

well i am glad you are not getting one, but yes they are very painful to the woman as well as the child of course. there is a lot of blood and cramps involved afterword also head aches that make you feel as if you are about to die too.Health Question & Answer
