How can I get over my fear of OB/GYN?!

Question: How can I get over my fear of OB/GYN.?
I have never gone but the thought of uteruses and someone looking inside really makes me feel nauseous and want to pass out. The same feeling some people get when they give blood. When I think about it, it is like surgery, they are opening you up and spreading things apart, I think that is the part that makes me sick. If I go I'm afraid I might cry/vomit or pass out. Please help me think of ways I can get through this. Health Question & Answer

Ok....They don't really look into your uterus. LOL. It's more like your vagina. It's kinda weird at first, but it's important that you see a gyno. They check you for cancer, give you access to birth control and can be very comforting if anything is ever wrong with you physically. First, find a good doctor that you trust. Perhaps you will be more comfortable with a woman. I myself, don't care as long as they're a good, knowledgeable doctor who makes me feel comfortable. The first time, ask questions- tell them you're nervous. It's O.K.- they deal with it all the time. Ask them to explain what they'll be doing before they do it. I'm the type of girl who never wanted to have kids because I have this "thing" about my vagina. Like, I never want it to birth a baby and the thought FREAKS ME OUT. Birth is like wide-awake surgery and I've always been terrified. i'm over 30 and don't have kids. I can't deal with it. So, I'm kinda squeamish when it comes to gyno stuff too. It's a little awkward to spread your legs and get an exam, but ALL women do it and doctors see it 100 times a day. It's very professional and over pretty quickly. It's mildly uncomfortable, but not painful. It's gonna be alright. My best advice is to find a good doc. Ask people you know for starters who they like. also, there's always a nurse present, so she can help you through your nervousness too.Health Question & Answer

Its just like a doctor having you open your mouth and say "ahhh." People get super stressed over these exams because they are taught to be embarrassed of their nakedness, particularly in that area. But you don't need to be. The doctor is just making sure everything is going well down there. And the exams can prevent pain and discomfort down the road by catching things early before they are as serious.

You can bring a friend if you'd like. She can hold your hand and look at your face and not see anything. Most doctors are okay with this. I got through my first one this way.

If this is really, really worrisome, you could call your doctor and ask for a prescription for a chill pill to take before. They may or may not be willing to do that. Otherwise you could take a benedryl. That would mellow you out a bit.

Really, try not to stress, it is not really a big deal.Health Question & Answer

Here are a few suggestions:

1 - make sure you get a Doctor that you are comfortable with. If you don't have a family doctor that you know who will be examining you; talk to friends, family, etc.. and find someone that is recommended, and someone that fits the description of the person that YOU think you
