So confused do I have PCOS?!

Question: So confused do I have PCOS.?
I went to the gynecologist for an annual exam and I brought up my concerns of my hairiness(from my belly to upper and inner thigh area)sorry if that is tmi. In addition I have always had mild-moderate acne and wanted to see if something else other than topicals could help it. Long story short I had blood work and I have high Testosterone levels, 87. I also had an endovaginal ultrasound this week and was told I by the ultrasound technician everything looked fine. My gynecologist's office called me and said I have small cysts on both my ovaries and it COULD BE Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and I can come in and follow up with her if I was interested in birth control. So my question is, Do I have PCOS or not.? Should I have more tests.? Is this a serious thing and shouldn't I follow up with Gyno anyway.? Should I have anything removed.? Should I be following up with an endocrinologist instead of the gyno.? If I do take birth control pills, which is the best one to help me with my acne and hairiness.?I've never been on birth control before, I'm a virgin. I've ALWAYS had regular periods, always on schedule never heavy or light, only cramping on the first day. I've also always been skinny, maybe even a little underweight. I'm 5'7, 130 lbs. So I'm not sure if you have the cysts but not necessarilly have PCOS. Anyway thanks in advance for any help.Health Question & Answer

i was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago. I would go back and follow up with you GYNO and see what she has to say. One of the biggest symptoms of PCOS is that you have frequent missed periods. Ovaries have cysts on them....the cysts then burst and that's what cause you to get your period. if you don't feel relief after speaking with your GYNO, try to see an endocrinologist. he/she may be able to run more conclusive diagnostic tests. the thing with the testosterone being so high is that hormones run in cycles, so if your blood work was done at a certain point in the cycle it could be higher than normal.

Birth control is usually the way that PCOS is treated. It definately helped me with the excessive hair. from my point of view.....the name makes it sound A LOT scarier than it actually is. Try to relax and not worry to much about it. Unless you are trying to conceive, which is does not sound like you are right now, the diagnosis will not have very much affect on you. i started to panic too when i was given the diagnosis. of course, since i had the excessive hair growth, missed periods, and was over-weight it was also a relief to finally know what was wrong with me. when i started taking the BC pills i lost 10 pounds in a few weeks! plus i love that i can predict when i get my period now, something i was never able to do before.

BTW....i'm not a doctor, i've just tried to learn as much as i could about this condition. it's hard to say if you do absolutely have it. Go and speak to your Gyno. if you don't feel peace of mind then follow up with an endocrinologist.Health Question & Answer

I'm not an expert on PCOS, but I do know that if your doctor is telling you everything you want to know, you have GOT to ASK! Doctors don't always see the question mark on your face, and if you don't speak up, their answers won't come. Take charge of the situation. When it's something serious/ important, ask all the questions you have. Don't be embarrassed to ask, that's what they are there for. Call you doc and schedule a consult to talk to him/her and get the answers you need!Health Question & Answer
