NUVARING USERS (or doctors who know about it)?!

Question: NUVARING USERS (or doctors who know about it).?
I've been on the nuva ring for almost a year now. I didn't notice any symptoms for the first few monthsm but recently, I've been having a lot of access discharge, some itching, and some sense of urgency (slight feeling like I have to go pee).

I had a yeast infection a while back, but I took meds to get rid of it. I thought the yeast infection came back, so I went to the doctors. She said it looked like a yeast infection, so she gave me a pill (diflucan, i think). Anyway, I also got tested for all stds and uti's while I was there, just in case. They said they would contact me within 2 weeks if anything was wrong, and they never did (that was more than 3 weeks ago). I haven't had sexual contact in months, and I was never contacted about STDs from the docs, so I am pretty sure that its not this.

So what my question is, is with the nuva ring can I get these symptoms.? Again, the symptoms are thicker and more discharge, slight itching, and a slight feeling like I have to go pee. I didn't have these symptoms when I first started the ring, so why would it show up almost a year later.? What else could it be.?Health Question & Answer

It is most likely that they symptoms you note in your question are indeed side effects of the Nuvaring. Following are some examples that I'm sure you can appreciate.

I have been on the NR for almost 2 years. I hate taking pills b/c I would forget to take them on a regular basis and trying to play catch up in just crazy. But I also suffered from chronic yeast infection so my OB suggested the NR and since I have been on it I have not had anymore YI's. However, I have experienced more vaginal secretions than normal; but it has not alarmed. About 2 weeks after inserting NR ..I experienced breakthrough bleeding and I have been since being on NR and it does not alarm me. I suffer from Hot Flashes and night sweats; but that is from my Thyroid Gland. For those of you experiencing Hot Flashes and Night Sweats..have your PCP do a blood test and check your thyroid hormones. The biggest thing that I have noticed is that while on the NR my YI have virtually gone to 0...I have had more Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) than you can shake a stick at. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what are you doing about it.?

I feel so much better after reading this site! I've been on NuvaRing for two months and have had serious bouts with depression for the first time in my life. I mean, I've felt down before, but never like this. Just today I wanted to cry for no reason about 90% of the time. I've had abdominal pain and back pain that I never had before. The mood swings are really the worst (just ask my boyfriend). I relate to what another girl said; that her mood swings range from white hot anger to serious depression. On days like today (less than a week before my period) I just want to sleep the day away. I don't want to interact with anyone and everything makes me miserable. also, it's changed the way everything smells down there. My boyfriend is really good about it, but even he admits that it's unpleasant to him. I've asked my gyno and she said that I don't have a UTI or a yeast infection, so right now the only explanation is this new birth control. Thankfully Monday is the day I take it out, and I'll be taking it out for good. I hope more women review this site before trying out this birth control because everyone should know the real side effects...the ones your doctor won't tell you.

I stumbled upon this site looking for side effects of a new BC I am about to start called Loestrin and after reading the horror stories about it, I was about to throw it out. I decided to look at the Nuvaring board because I was on it for 2 1/2 years and was curious to see what was said about it. Had I read this prior to starting the Nuvaring I probably wouldn't have given it a chance. I loved Nuvaring. It was so convenient and I had no side effects at all from it and my cycle was so regular and predictable. I had a yeast infection and vaginitis in the 2 1/2 year period but I don't think it was due to the ring. Unfortunately, I have to change BC to Loestrin due to Endometriosis symptoms that the ring wont help with so I searched it and was discouraged by the reports but now I feel better giving it a try after seeing these posts because I had no problems at all with Nuvaring. I would recommend trying it if you are looking for convenience and regulation.

There hundreds of these stories by users at the following site:

NuvaRing Discomforts

I didn't have any problems for the first 2 days. Then I started noticing excess discharge in large quantities. It never had a foul smell, though. Then I started to get very dry around the vaginal area and had problems getting "wet." Now I've had it out for several days and I still have this HORRIBLE itching that when I itch it turns into a HORRIBLE burning. Has anyone else had any luck getting rid of this. I'm also noticing that the lower part of my vaging, kind of between my anus and vagina, is very thing and starting to rip during sex. I've been w/ my fiance for 4 years now and although he is bigger than normal I don't think that's what's causing it.

I have been on the ring for about 2 weeks with no problems, but I just had many of the same yeast infection symptoms many of you spoke about. Itching, burning, discharge, etc. I just took the ring out, rinsed it off, and waited about a half hour and put it back in. I feel much better now. This is disturbing and uncomfortable though. I hope it doesn't continue. Please let me know of anything else that has helped somone.

Side Effects
As with any medicine, side effects are possible. However, not everyone who uses the contraceptive will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. Health Question & Answer

The discharge is a side effect. My gyno warned me about it before she started me on the ring. It doesn't have a bad odor so i don't mind it too much. The ring may be causing the feeling of discomfort, but as long as it doesn't burn when you urinate, you should be ok. Your body is constantly changing and trying to balance hormones and Ph levels which may be causing your symptoms. Hopefully it's only temporary. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

im not sure about the thicker discharge..but the urgency to pee and itching sounds like a UTI. you could be having a UTI and a yeast infection at the same time. If you pee and only a little bit comes out at a time and you still feel like you have to go, but nothing comes out...it is probally a UTI. drink tons of cranberry juice!Health Question & Answer

Yay! These things can be cleared on their own. Drink lots of water, cranberry juice, and tea. It's also very good to eat yogurt to get that bacterial balance back into your system. Health Question & Answer

Definitely sounds like a yeast infection to me.Health Question & Answer

When I first started on NuvaRing, I had absolutely no problems. Then, about 5 months later I contracted a yeast infection (from wearing my bathing suit wet too long after being at the lake and driving home in it..YUCK)

yeast infection was treated and the antifungal medication unbalanced my system and I ended up with a UTI...treated that, got another yeast infection...after that treatment I ended up with a KIDNEY infection!! nearly landed in the hospital.

Finally after 4 months of doctoring they both settled down and I've had no problems at all for the last 2 years.

Whether or not its caused by NuvaRing, I can't say, but it does sound like you're going thru what I dealt with...
Your pharmacy will sell something called Azo tablets over the counter, they are bladder numbers. I'd recommend using those for a while and drinking LOTS of water and cranberry juice (sugar free, the sugars in cocktail juices make it worse) and when you feel the need to pee GO right away...holding it will allow any bacteria that might be present to just hang around and possibly head up to your kidneysHealth Question & Answer
