Unless you're on birth control, having sex or have a family history of problems down there, you usually don't need to go until you're 18.
They put you on an exam table and use a speculum to open your vaginal canal a bit wider so that they can take a look inside and make sure everything looks healthy. (uncomfortable and awkward but not painful) Then while the speculum is still in they take a long swab (looks like a big q-tip) and scrape a few cells off your cervix to check for cancer, stds (if you ask for an std screen) and make sure you're healthy. (sounds scary but it just kinda tickles) Then they press on your tummy to feel your ovaries and uterus to make sure they're healthy. (this doesn't hurt. if it does you have a problem, which is what they're checking for). Sounds like a lot but good doctors are in and out of there so fast you have your clothes back on before you even process what just happened. Its scary because its so personal and awkward the first time, but its not bad. Just weird.Health Question & Answer

18 or after you become sexually active. They will take a swab of your cervical muscus(this is a PAP smear) to check on HPV , you can ask to be checked for STDs, and they will weigh you and take your blood pressure, maybe prick your finger to check for hemoglobin and do a breast exam to check for lumps.

you should go to gyn when you when you start your period first have sex or if you think there is a problem down there. Its no big deal at all. The dr's are very nice and professional. Most dr's will explain fully what they are gonna do before they do it. Good luck!Health Question & Answer
