Women...do pap tests hurt ?!

Question: Women...do pap tests hurt .?
Okay I am 22 so I have already gone for a pap test but it's been a while and I don't remeber exactly what they do. I know we take off our pants and underwear and lay down with our legs open ..but that's all I rememeber. Does it hurt .? And does the doctor look up there, it must feel awkward. When I had mine done, it was done by a woman but now I have a new family doctor and the next time I see him, I'm getting a pap test, and I was sexually abused when I was younger, so I am scared of having it done...And just a different question...do you women shave down there. If so , do you shave all of it...some of it or none of it. Health Question & Answer

ok.. i am actually going for my annual pap tomorrow morning. you'll lie down and they will insert a metal beak thing inside you. then they open it up not really big just enough to see your cervix and make sure every thing's ok. then they will take a swab of your cervix to test for cervical cancer. then the doctor will insert a finger and push up and take the other hand and place it on your abdomen to feel if there is any abnormalities in that region. then they send the swab off for testing and that's pretty much it. they might give you a pregnancy test some do..tell you doctor that you are nervous and to tell you everything they are doing. the first time i had mine done it was a male and he didn't talk to me at all.i was so scared and nervous. i didn't go to him anymore. now i have female doctors and they are really great. just be sure to let them know you are nervous.

and i shave it all.. i think it looks weird if you just do some or not at all.. but its all your preferenceHealth Question & Answer

You just feel a little pressure. You have to relax and most Drs will talk to you to keep your mind off of it. You just lie down and have to scoot down so you are near the edge of the table and then put your legs in the stirrups. It only takes a few minutes, but the anticipation is what is worse. Regarding shaving, you don't have to shave for this procedure. Good luck. It will be over before you know it. Health Question & Answer
