The hymen has a hole in it that allows the blood to come out. In rare instances, it does completely cover the opening and will have to be cut by a doctor in order for the girl to have her period.
For some people the hole is small - some girls can't use tampons because of this. In others its bigger. Even after the hymen is broken by sex, parts of if will still remain until the women gives birth, when it is completely removed by the baby on its way out.Health Question & Answer

you shouldn't feel stupid asking it, it's normal to be curious. and the reason we can still have a period is because the hymen never completely blocks off the "hole". and if you are and have been physically active with sports and stufff or use tampons or had sex, then the hymen either wears down or completely comes off.Health Question & Answer
In a normal hymen, it doesn't block the hole completely. It leaves enough room for the menstrual flow to come out.

Please don't ever feel stupid for asking a question, especially one of this nature. It's NOT what most gals think it is. Look online for a better description of where the Hymen is located.Health Question & Answer
The Hymen isn't a solid mass of flesh. It's only a membrane that surrounds the walls of the vagina. It's got a small opening to allow discharge.Health Question & Answer
It's not completely covering it- just partly. If it's there at all (which it may not be), there will still be a hole for blood to come out.Health Question & Answer
