Question: My sister got the news today that she is at a higher risk, 2%, the way the doctor put it for down syndrome.?
I was just wondering what this means since all I have been finding are ratio's not percents. We will love the baby no matter what of course, I was just wondering what this means. She is going for her level 2 ultrasound right now. We are also going to find out if she is having a boy or girl today.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
down syndrome is caused by problems with the way chromosomes separate in meiosis. Depending on where the problem occurred, or with which parent, the chances for downs is different.

for instance, the 2% risk you mentioned is consistent with what is called a "robertsonian translocation" involving chromosome 21 from the father. the risk would actually be higher if this anomaly occurred with the mother's chromosomes.

the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of a perfectly healthy baby, so try not to let stats like these change the fact that in a few months, there will be a beautiful new addition to your family.Health Question & Answer

It means that her blood tests and ultrasound have come up with a slightly questionable result - so the next ultrasound is a good idea for preparing yourselves.

In reality it means she has a 1 chance in about 50 of having a downs baby - which is highish if she is young but low if she is over 37 years old.Health Question & Answer

it just means that she has a slightly higher possibility of having a baby with down's syndrome.

Seriously, visualize the baby as healthy and just know in your heart that everything will be perfect. (its a form of prayer, and it works)Health Question & Answer

Don't panic. Most times they are wrong. My sister was told the same thing twice and both her kids were fine. I was told my chances were high and my kids were fine so panic and see what happens.Health Question & Answer

Visualize the baby being healthy and make sure she eats well.Health Question & Answer
