does a 16 yr old on narcotics for migraines have to have someone with her at all!
Question:
Answers:
If the strength of the narcotic does not interfere with normal daily functions like reading a book, eating dinner, going to the bathroom, walking to your bedroom, putting on your clothes, sitting in homeroom, etc. I don't think a 16-year old needs to have a constant companion.
If the narcotic is very strong and/or a very high dose, it's a good idea to have someone near by for safety reasons. Anyone, not just a 16-year old can trip over their own feet, bump into a wall, falling asleep during a task that you should be awake.
If anyone has to use a heavy-duty narcotic for a Migraine, they shouldn't be driving a car, going to a party or hanging out in the mall and are more likely going to be at home in bed, or on the couch snoozing. In my opinion, a 16-year old doesn't need a babysitter when napping on the couch.
If I was 16 and throwing up because of the Migraine or the strength of the medication, there is no way I'd want a companion in the bathroom with me.
And remember using narcotics more than 2 or 3 days a week can cause Medication Overuse Headaches (aka Rebound Headaches).

that would depend on her tolerance and how she is adjusting to the narcotics. the best treatment i have found for migranes is a non narcotic over the counter remedy. reccomended to me by my neurologist for my own migranes- it is called CoQ 10 enzyme and can be bought at most drug stores and walgreens. i am able to stave off most of my migrane problems with daily doses of this. if you have a sam's club card, it is the cheapest there. doctors will not tell you this unless you ask- and i think the only reason mine knew is his history in eastern medicine- he is chinese!
you will have to work with her to get the dosage right- i would start with a "normal" of about 100 mg a day, you can always increase. and because it gives you energy i take mine in the morning.
mind you, i am no doctor- but i would rccomend trying to get your daughter OFF the narcotics so you do not have to worry.

For the first day or two. However, I would suggest you always be the one to give her her medicine. Even if you trust her with all your heart; she is still a teenage girl and it is still a narcotic. It is hard for some strong willed adults to dose themselves correctly with narcotics, it is even harder for a teenage girl. Good luck to both of you.
