Depends. I had my hamster for 1 1/2 years and then died.
Gerbils are reported to live an average of two years, (I researched this when I was younger), but I had one that lived about six years. Because people were shocked at how long I had her, I did my own checking.
I haven't a clue don't know any gerbils.
