What does an enlarged spleen mean?!

Question: I went to the doctor with my friend last night because she was having flank pain on the left side and really bad back pain..Well the doctor told her that she had an emlarged spleen..

Has anyone ever had an enlarged spleen or does anyone know what this could be a sign of?

Just curious..thanks in advance!
Answers:
The spleen is in your body as a "filter" and it becomes enlarged when there has been a problem like an infection or disease process going on, for instance, a respiratory infection. It can also indicate very serious problems, for instance, liver disease or hepatitis. There is no way of knowing in this venue but ask your doctor, please, to educate your self and your friend. Good Luck and Blessings.

an enlarged spleen is when the spleen is a little bit larger than normal.
Spleen: a large dark-red oval organ on the left side of the body between the stomach and the diaphragm; produces cells involved in immune responses. An enlarged spleen indicates that the immunity system in your body has been compromised and needs to be strengthened as soon as possible. Spleen swells to accomodate a rapid, higher than usual immunity agents.

common sense :D
An enlarged spleen or splenomegaly is common in many blood disorders.
The most common would be different types of haemolytic anaemia, where something is causing the red blood cells to rupture & these pieces get trapped in the spleen as it 'cleans' the blood. There are many different situations that can cause this.
Another common cause is from a white blood cell disorder that requires more and more to be produced. This can be due to different types of leukaemia.
I'm surprised the doctor didn't tell her what he thought it was but I hope they got a blood test sent away.
