If you have a kidney infection -- not just a bladder infection, but a kidney infection (extremely high fevers, vomiting, bloody urine), then you need to get on antibiotics and you need to do so quickly. See your doctor immediately. Kidney infections can be very serious.

When a person says a kidney infection, they usually mean a bladder infection. A bladder infection produces burning upon urination, frequent urination, and sometimes some discomfort in the bladder. A kidney infection is more serious, and is manifest by spikes of high fever, pain in the side of the back or flank, and generally a sicker patient. Urine infections are far more common in females than males. A urine infection in a male is so uncommon as to suggest a structural abnormality, so we usually do an IVP or xray of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra to check it out.
A sexually transmitted infection can cause burning on urination. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea do this in both men and women. Vaginitis in a woman can cause burning on urination, whether caused by trichomonas or yeast or gardnerella vaginales. If your sex history suggests this possibility, or if you have a vaginal discharge, then go get checked for these things.
A simple bladder infection can be treated with any number of antibiotics. A couple of doses may do it, but I like to give a full 10 days worth, to help prevent relapse or reoccurence. Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. is good or Macrodantin or any of the fluoroquinolones, such as Cipro. Even amoxicillin may do it. Cranberry juice can cure it, but I recommend the real thing, either available from a health food store, or home squeezed. You drink a glass of the real stuff 4x/day. The cranberry juice cocktail is too weak to be of much use. Vitamin C, the acid kind, ascorbic acid, in high doses of 1000-2000 mg 4x/day can cure a bladder infection.
A kidney infection is more serious and you need to get more aggressive about treating it. In pregnancy, we usually admit a kidney infection and give high dose IV antibiotics for it.
Pyridium can ease the burning on urination immediately, before the other treatment has had a chance to kick in. It is a pill.
