Is white noise harmful to people?!

Question: We have a few white noise machines at work and they are actually quite loud and annoying. Can white noise actually be harmful to those that have to listen to it for a 8 hours a day?
Answers:
Yes it can be somewhat harmful to the ear. BUT according to OSHA it is not suppose to be. I would consider on purchasing ear plugs for safety measures. hope this info helps

As seen in the OSHA Noise Exposure table in figure 2, the louder the sound, the less time it takes for damage to occur. OSHA limits noise exposure levels in the work environment to about 90dB for an 8-hour period, but permits exposure to higher levels for short periods. Many experts believe that the OSHA numbers are too high for hearing safety. EU countries have very strict laws about noise exposure. For example, U.K. employers must take action at two levels of noise exposure: 85dB and 90dB. At 85dB, employers must offer hearing protection and hearing education to employees. At 90dB or higher, employees MUST wear earplugs, and the employer MUST try to reduce the ambient noise level.

90 dbA 8 hrs
92 dbA 6 hrs
95 dbA 4 hrs
97 dbA 3 hrs
100 dbA 2 hrs
102 dbA 1.5 hrs
105 dbA 1 hr
110 dbA 0.5 hr
115 dbA 0.25 hr or less

Note: When the daily noise exposure is composed of two or
more periods of noise exposure of different levels, their combined effect should be considered, rather than the individual effect of each. Exposure to impulsive or impact noise should not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level.

Other Answers:
Any loud sound is bad for you. The military took parts of my hearing, considering it is mostly vehicular noise. You might want to talk to your management about doing something about the sound or start issuing ear plugs.

Hearing loss isn't a joke.
No.

And i suggest that u shud take ur time to talk to ur boss about how much its bothering u, spending too long in the prescense of a white noise producing machine can be harmful. no..i study things like that it isnt trust me..it is harmfull if you listen to them too close..if you do then stop dont get involved with what you hear.thas not good for you.ppl have been known to go crazy near white niose machines (tvs radios or even water)its all tragic really..so just dont pay any attention to them ..or try your best ..dont get involved with what you hear..
White noise is like tuning your radio between stations- not harmful but any sound over 85 dB (decibels) for a long time can be. You mean machines designed to produce a 'hissing' sound to block out other sounds- such as conversations nearby? I wonder where you work and why they're so turned up so loud.
