I have gone through depression. I was prescribed medication, and I took it, but that is not what saved me. One day, my mom saw me moping around the house, and she told me "Go outside. Do something. Even if it doesn't make you happy, try it and keep doing it until you start to feel better." Be patient. The activities that used to make you happy may not be enjoyable to you now, but the more you do the things you know you have enjoyed in the past, the more likely you will begin to recover. It took me weeks-- even months-- and it was a gradual process.

Exercise will increase endorphins, a chemical your body produces naturally that will help you "feel" better.
it all depends on how bad your depression is. sometimes just talking to family members will help or to go to a doctor. depends on how bad you are that you will have to take medication. there are so many types of depression so if i were you go to your family doctor and discuss it with the doctor and see what they might have to say. tell them how you feel about not wanting to take medications if all possible. again it all depends on what type of depression you have. exercise go for walks eat right. keep yourself busy. talk to friends. join groups ect. try to keep your mind on other things then your depression. on my 360 page i have a group called we are here to help you. that is what the group is for. to help people.
Spend lots and enjoy yourself!
Seeing a therapist is a good idea. And there's no shame in giving it a try, you know ?

Dealing with that stuff is their job, and "studies have shown" that therapy works as well as meds, when it comes to depression.

Plus.just the fact that you *have* taken a step for yourself ( and shown yourself that you are not as helpless as you depression is telling you that you are) can help you feel better..all by itself.

Also.recent studies have shown that depression actually causes physical damage to the brain..and that that damage has the effect of making you increasingly vulnerable to even MORE depression later in life.

So...from a purely practical standpoint..you really don't want to let it go on for too long, if you can help it. It's better to go see someone ASAP..if you follow me ?

Ask yourself some hard questions. Depression is either endogenous (from within), or exogenous (external). If you're in a bad marriage, experienced a loss, or have some other negative external factors to deal with, medication isn't the answer. Start with a complete physical to rule out a medical condition such as hypothyroidism. Exercise, volunteer, practice good nutrition. If all else fails, talk to someone. I don't recommend a psychiatrist, a social worker or psychologist is more inclined to help you uncover the root of your depression. Don't discount medication if you try everything else and you still have the wet blanket of oppression suffocating you. Go to your local library and get a book by Dr. David Burns entitled "Feeling Good.". Meditate. The hardest part is actually doing something. It's an effort to leave the house sometimes, but please do something.

You need to set yourself a major plan and a lot of goals.
First thing you have to do is a complete makeover internal/external. I got over my depression by changing my life. It isnt easy but thats obv. whats depressing you in the first place so it has to go and you gotta get a new one. Its not easy to do alone so this is where you have to confide in people. First person to help is a counsellor. They can help you get to the bottom of where your problem first started if you cant. Then maybe confide in a friend or family member or even an E pal.
I agree with Monica.

Remember though, all meds are not right for you. I have tried several and am just now feeling better. you body may have a better experience with a different med or a combination. Give the meds time time work as instructed by your doctor. Only will you know by then to try something different and you need to be firm with your doctor in this decision. You know how you feel, they don't unless you tell them.
Indulge yourself in variety of creative activities that you like.Try to be enthusiastic. Cultivate your hobbies. Take a short break & spend a lot of time with your beloved & near_n_ dear ones.
Always believe in yourself. Look at the life as a glass which is half-full, not as one half-empty.Its no medicine but your own strong will and determination that will help you to win this irritating situation.
