why does my tooth still hurt?!

Question: One of my back teeth split in half 2 yrs ago luckily there was no decay so the dentist placed a really big silver filling in there but 3 days ago part of the filling cracked and came away. I went straight to the dentist because it had no decay. I had it filled again with a white filling this time, first q. does anyone know why a white one? second q. why does my tooth still hurt? The first day it hurt all night and then slowly the pain went away but I can't chew on that side as it's still a bit sensitive. My bite is fine as far as the filling being grinded down enough. I have a high level of tolerance to the aesthetic and initially hit the roof when I felt the drill. That really hurt!
Is it possible the pain will completely go away or has it been too long now?
Answers:
well. white fillings are bonded in. silver ones are held in by undercuts so you dentist felt it would hold better. if it is that big, you needed a crown not a filling. anyway..it sounds like you fractured your tooth, if so and the fracture goes to pulpal floor (where crown meets roots) it is nonrestorable. even a root canal wont help. go back to your dentist.

did the dentist proscribe an antibiotic the air can carry in a germ and infecvt the tooth at the root and if it does the swelling will go up try this place oil of cloves on it and take the antibiotics and wait till you cam see him again but maybe you need a second opinion but so far hes right on in the treatment also the silver amalgum fillings hold traces of mercury and mine caused all kinds of alergies and head aches so the white is better
You should call the dentist back up and let him know that you are still in pain. It might be that the tooth is infected and that you need an antibiotic.
It sounds to me like you need a root canal, not just a regular filling.
i cant answer your pain problem, except to go back to the dentist..i think they use the white filling because it is cheaper and less noticable.
