Why are anorexia and bulimia such problems among adolescent girls?!

Question: Why would a girl starve or purge herself to absurd extremes? I hear a lot of people on TV feeling sorry for these girls, but I think what these girls are after is the ridiculous cakewalk of a life that hot, attractive girls have if they look just so, compared to the rest of us who have to make it on our merits.

If beauty is power, than the most beautiful is the most powerful. Sorry to sound so blunt, it seems to me as if this is the game they're playing, they shouldn't be getting any sympathy.

The medias portrayal of women.
Simply put as long as there are ridiculously thin models splashed all over it will be a problem.

those can affect ur body if u starve ull be lazy and tired, not energized and cant concentrate, who wants to puke anyways, i dont
Some girls have low self esteem and try to look like media symbols.
There are different theories why anorexia and bulimia exist. Some say it is a self-esteem issue, others say it is a control issue, still others say it is a dysfunction in the family. I recently heard that there may be a brain chemical imbalance.
ur right
i mean im skinny but not aneroxic looking
they look up to lindsay lohan and nicole richie and try to look like them
they also think that boys like aneroxic looking girls when they really dont
its crazy nowadays and these girls really need to understand that they can die from this just so they can lose 20 pounds
if they want to look skinny then they should excersise but not starve and they should eat healthy
anorexia sucks i mean i cant imagine how people dont eat almost anything! i eat a lot!.. maybe i have bulimia.. i dont think so becasue after eating i dont vomit so i dont have bulimia
movie stars reflect that you have to be 10 pounds and to be beautiful you have to look a certian way beauty comes in all shapes and sizes i am 15 and i weigh 96 lbs i get accused of bulemia and anorexia but i am not i am 5 ft tall and thats the way i am i am not changing anything about me because i believe i am a beautiful person inside and out
Things like anorexia and bolumia start off as a concious decision. Perhaps they were made fun of, or abused, or just have low self esteem for some reason or anothr. But after a while your actually brain chemistry changes and thats when its actually considered a desiese. They can't stop with out professional help. So yeah.. its their fault that it starts and I agree with you there its dumbto start in the first place. But once you get past the begginning stages.. they just need help.
Guys are NOT attracted to anorexic girls.
Because it is the way society is. Everyone talks bad about the Hanes commerical with the full size women being disgusting and they don't want to see that on tv. So girls think they have to be skinny in order for society to accept them, hardly anyone believes in personality being the most important thing anymore.
Some girls just aren't confident enough with their body, and want to become skinner. The best answer for them if they wanted to become skinner would be to go on a healthy diet and exercise, but sometimes that can be hard and they lose their patience. :\
If the media weren't so hellbent on rail thin appearances then girls wouldn't have this warped sense of mind. Furthermore, if parents would reinforce a strong self esteem, teach healthy eating/exercise and talk more with their kids about how the media is full of s.h.i.t. then there would be less of these problems.

BTW, I saw a chick at the grocery last night that was definately anorexic and I wanted to walk up and slap the piss out of her and tell her to wake up and eat some cake cuz she totally looked disgusting!
anorexia and bulimia are serious mental illnesses. it isn't all about starving themselves to look like models. and it can be a genetic illness. anorexia and bulimia aren't just when people are taking a diet too seriously - these people are mentally ill and you shouldn't make comments about a subject that you clearly know so little about.

and as for the person who said he wanted to slap an anorexic person - you CANNOT tell who is anorexic by looking at them! and even if she was she deserves more respect than that. when i was 13 i was doing a lot of cross-country running and found it hard to keep up with the amount of calories i needed to sustain it. so i was pretty slim cos that's my genetic body shape. one day i heard someone whispering about how i looked anorexic. but i'd never been healthier and i was really enjoying training and winning races - it was something i was naturally good at and which i found really fulfilling. please DON'T judge people on appearances - or you are being just a superficial as girls who want to look like their favourite movie star.
it's a way to stay skinny. I'm bulimic, but only during the holidays when there is sooo much good food to have. Also during the summer
Okay is this a question of yours or are you more less making a statement because it sounds as if your mind is already made up.

Girls have eating disorders because of many factors. Look at the TV commercials out there, look at magazine ads, and what most people don't realize is how many of us have heard our own mothers talk about how fat they are and need to diet, or hear our mom ask our dad "do I look fat in this?".
1. females, after puberty, they tend to have lesser self-esteem than before n compared to their male counterparts. tis is due to e fact that most adolescence gals grow further n further away from their ideal self.

2. due to v heavy media influences..and how women are portrayed

3. most pple w anorexia are associated with perfectionists. a personality prob.
I don't feel sorry for them. Eating is a simple necessity of life. If they're so narcissistic that they would put their health in jeopardy just to stay skinny, let em be.
My girlfriend just gave me her rant, and didn't want me to post this. She says these poor people have distorted body image and think they are fat no matter how skinny they are. I agree that it is a mental disorder usually induced by Vogue magazine and other glamor publications.
I admit there are some people who do it as a "game" as they see it as a way to get attention and for people to look at them. They may feel left out and alone and by doing this people will notice them. Some people however really do believe what they see in the mirror is "fat". I guess you dont really know how it feels until your in that situation. the media's portrayl of girls such as lindsey lohan etc really do ahve an impact upon girls these days.
you are correct, in a small way. Men like their women a certain way and that shows up in the media, magazines that..omg,teens read!
IT is a constant revolving door that doesn't cater to what is right with respects to our minds and bodies. That is why some girls end up this way. Insecurities, failures and the like will also play a role.
What you need is to walk 100 miles in the shoes of one these girls and see what they see, instead of judging/condeming them.

lived the life and still going strong!
the media constantly shows skinny women who are successful

i think this constant link (although largely incorrect) seen by young girls, between shrinking size and growing success has conditioned them into assosciating the two

and the fact that models are always skinny makes them think that you have to be skinny to be beautiful

if you look at psychological approaches there is some suggestion that eating disorders are used as a way of feeling in control of your life, or a means of avoiding adulthood.but i think these girls should definately gain sympathy.people with genuine eating disorders that is.
The media makes it look so important to be thin. You can't turn on the TV without seeing commercials for weight loss pills, exercise programs, diet plans, and stuff like that. Even during children's shows. Almost all models are unnaturally thin. It makes girls think that in order to look good, they have to be thin (which just isn't true).

Furthermore, girls can be mean to each other. A chubby girl will get teased and called fat at least once in her life, though probably a lot more than that. Even well-meaning friends and relatives make comments like "You look like you've put on some weight" or "You'd look really good if you lost weight" and enforce an obsession with weight loss by giving positive reinforcement when they do lose weight, even if they did look good before.

The result is that even skinny girls will think they're fat and feel like they have to lose weight. It's sad, but true.
I think you're oversimplifying a terrible problem brought on by a national obsession with beauty and a warped view of what constitutes beauty. The problem starts with girls much too young to make conscious, intelligent decisions about their actions and so, yes, they deserve a certain amount of sympathy and much understanding because their problem is deeply psychological and very difficult to overcome.
We are bombarded by a world that deals with outside appearances. We constantly see things about making our skin better, hair removal, liposuction, plastic surgery. all these things so that we look a certain way. This is the case in USA. I would wonder what the case would be in Europe where they are not constantly shown only air brushed.size 0 girls.they have in their magazines naked people..regular naked people.size 0-12.
I think our society has to start focusing on the beauty from the inside. There are too many people today who don't care about others, and that is the wrong way to go. We have to stop worrying about if we have to lose 5 pounds, and love ourselves for who we are.because only they can we truly love someone else.and..this world..needs a lot more love. That sounds like I am a hippie..lol..I am not, I just hate that people, especially the younger generations, show no concern for the people around them and the world they live in.just care about what brand of jeans they should wear.
:)
It´s because these girls take as a reference the exterior image as the most important thing in the world. The top models, actresses, singers, etc thar rules today they are TOO skinny and TOO good looking at that point, that it seems to be the only thing that matters for these girls. There are two more facts that are really important:
- They don´t have family support (no one tells them to eat properly or say: You´re not fat! Family don´t comunicate well)
-Men in the society preffer skinny girls with big boobs and pretty tan faces (I don´t say that ALL men are like that, but the prefferences of many, many men are like this, so the girls, to try to appear attractive do these stupid things)
That´s my point of view, I hope you understand me (my english I mean.)
That is blunt. Anorexia is a physiological disorder, would you say the same thing about any other crazy person.
but all of anorectic think that are fat and people who are telling that we are skinny is joking.
I'm on it 'cos I'm fashion victim. i don't want help. i just want to wear all clothes and looks on them great.
