It is very common, but most people don't know that they are coughing them out, or they are swallowing them. They are actually little balls of food that get stuck behind your tonsils or behind your epiglottis that you cough up. They have been in there a while, and bacteria has started eating them up, and they small horrible. But it's completely normal and not assocaited with any disease states.
