Postoperatively, assess the patient for bladder distention, and catheterize as needed. Administer pain medications as ordered, to maintain comfort. Take vital signs and observe for any bleeding or symptoms of hemorrhage for the first few hours after surgery. Prevent respiratory complications by frequently turning the patient and by having her cough and breathe deeply every 1-2 hours in the post operative period. Ensure that the patient wears elastic stockings, does leg exercises daily, and ambulates as ordered to help prevent blood clots. Also assess the patient for a positive Homans' sign. The patient recovering from a hysterectomy should have a high protein diet. Teach the patient about the need to maintain good nutrition and fluid intake and to report vaginal bleeding. Hormone replacement therapy should be presented, and prescribed therapy should be started as soon as possible, as soon as the patient is able to take oral fluids.
