Help? My father (70 yo) has suffered infrequent attacks of night sweats, severe!

Question: He is on medication for hiatus hernia and has been for several years. These episodes are very infrequent, so no pattern can be established. He is always extremely tired the day after an attack, but then makes a full recovery and will have no problems for months. He has spoken to 3 diff gp's and nobody can offer any explanation. He has had all usual tests, heart, lungs, bloods and the only thing that showed any abnormalities was liver. After several more blood tests GP said that the levels although slightly raised, could be 'normal' for him. He has also had an ultrasound test and was informed that his liver looked 'bright' whatever that means. But was told the reason for that is the european diet. He also served with the RAF in Egypt for 3 years about 50 years ago but never had malaria, and these episodes have only started within the last 5 years. Yes he has been trying to get answers for that long!It seems because there is no set pattern and happens so infrequently nobody can help.
