Why are antidepressants not a curative drug?!

Question:
Answers:
maybe depression, or any mental illness, cant really be cured, like a broken bone. maybe mental illness will always be like alcoholism or substance abuse- under control but still there.

Other Answers:
Antidepressants only change behavior that is a symptom of a larger problem. There is no change in behavior when the drug is no longer used. At best, a temporary solution to a long term problem.
Antidepressants are not curative because they simply counteract the depression not fix the problem. Whatever the reason for the depression it is expressed, on a physiological level, as the transmissions between neurons in the brain. Antidepressants will either increase or decrease the action of these neurons by various methods. This means that when the person is on the drug and levels are maintained it is capable of helping the symptoms of depression but it doesn't actually eliminate the underlying cause.
