Talk to a shrink. I'm serious by the way. Also, you might want to get more exercise during the day. It will tire you out and let your mind deal with more issues during REM.
for me, the thing that made the difference was that I learned Transcendental Meditation. You have to learn it from a teacher one-to-one and it's expensive, but worth it's weight in gold. I tried a few other meditation techniques before TM but this is the Real Thing. It's not a religion or a lifestyle, it doesn't take long and it works! It's incredibly easy to do. You dont have to psh the thoughts away, they just dissolve and you get peace of mind. It worked for me.
Here's what works for me:

1. Exercise
2. Outside activities
3. A night out with friends
4. Take a short trip someplace
5. More exercise
i know you will be sceptical but try white chestnut from the 38 bach flower remedies.but first read "step by step bachflower remedies"by judy howard..believe me its the best thing youl eva do..well may b thats a bit strong but tha good!
PRAYER. Do not let your thoughts rule. Focus on offering your thoughts and troubles to your maker. It may take a few nights before things get better. Also, don't trust your own judgement, sometimes your thoughts will lead you to worry sometimes to worse. Let the Master handle it! He helped me, now I have trouble keeping awake!
1. exercise - getting your blood flowing helps you fall asleep
2. read a very very boring book
3. pray
4. if all else fails, a few drinks never hurt.
simple things you can do that other haven't mentioned

- avoid stimulants like coffee and cigarettes in the evening (that goes for illegal ones too)
- avoid alcohol before bed
- if you can't sleep, get out of bed and do something useful for half an hour, then go back to bed and try to fall asleep for 30 minutes. if sleep still doesn't come, get out of bed and repeat until it does.
- make sure you get out of bed in the morning. if you are always waking at midday then you will find it hard to sleep when evening comes.

finally, difficulty falling asleep is often a sign of anxiety, which it sounds like you are describing. go and see your doctor and see what he suggests; you may benefit from CBT or possibly medication if more conservative measures fail.

hope you sleep well soon as i am in exactly the same boat and I have an idea how you must feel.
Use the MARV Technique -- Meditation, Affirmations, Relaxation and Visualization. You can find simple books on meditation at any book store. Also, I agree with the Bach Flower Remedy offered as well. Google "Bach Flower Remedies" and learn more about these wonderful products. I use them on a regular basis with my family. Including my 27 year old son.

just think of something like sheep jumping over the fence or something boaring..i usually just think of my math teacher taking he is so stupid and he thinks he is smart..
try this first never go to bed on an empty stomach, try a glass of warm milk, it sounds very basic but it helps you to sleep, secondly ask yourself if the thing that's worrying you, is going to A) happen probably ,B) will happen definately C) just your imagination going wild, whichever it is it will not change anything anyway the old maxim was don't cross your bridges till you come to them and usually believe me none of the things we worry about ever come true, and as a final thought do not watch news programmes before going to bed, in fact avoid newspapers, and anything that brings other peoples problems into your life , you and I have as much as we can cope with anyway, and be happy, this was the first advice that a specialist in sleep disorders prescribed good luck I also agree with the book idea.get reading kiddo. cheers sweet dreams
