Therapy??!

Question: With the overwhelming feed back on my last post, maybe I do actually need professional help, I do have a question though. If I go see a licensed therapist, can he/she put me in the mental ward of a hospital/asylum? This is not a joke, I've been there before, and am very scared of it and the reason why I haven’t gone in years is because I was always afraid. Please leave a source for information if you can. I need help though, I really do.
Answers:
So long as you don't lead your therapist to believe that you are a danger to yourself or to other people, your therapist will have no reason to consider calling the authorities to have you involuntarily committed.

It's a technicality, but therapists don't actually hold the power to have you committed. That's a power generally held by the state (only the State can deprive you of liberty). What typically happens is that, if a therapist believes someone is a threat to self or others, the therapist will notify the police, who will follow civil commitment procedures. Another way to have someone involuntarily committed is through "mental health courts," where a judge issues a "mental health warrant" to have law enforcement involuntarily commit a person. Someone has to convince the judge that the person is a danger.

As others have written, each state has its own law about involuntary commitment.

It depends. Call them on the phone and ask if that is a possibility.
If it had your life or someone elses life at stake I'm sure they could.
are you a threat? to yourself or others? if they know that they might, have you tried any medication?
I think going to a hospital/asylum is not that wise as you will likely end up there or somewhere connected if you get too comfortable.

Do you not have a group of friends who you can talk with? That's all you really need. You might even consider relocating to another city or town and starting again. It's good to restart.
You can be 'certified' if you're suicidal. If you say you are going to commit it, or have tried you'll be certified. I know that one. A psychiatrist won't have you certified unless he/she believes you really will go out that same day and kill yourself. I've told my psychiatrist, counsellor so on and so forth, that I'm thinking of it and I wasn't sent to the looney bin. It's when you deal with doctors and hospitals that you end up in a straight jacket. They don't handle that **** too well. You need to be honest with your psychiatrist, tell them how you really feel. Tell them about your experience too, that your scared and don't want a repeat. If you need help, get it. Don't wait because of something that may happen, just go and ask questions and don't be afraid to say what you need to say (within reason) get educated about yourself and your problems. Okay, I'm outtie. Good luck.
you can have therapy without being committed .. if you are not a threat to yourself or anyone else they wont lock you up..what kind of source of information do you need?
it depends on the state. Most states have laws, such as the 5150 in CA that says if there is harm to yourself or others (based on your behavior and what you say), for example, they can put you on a 72-hour hold to assess you and determine if its safe to let you go.
no they cant put u n da mental ward! ITS ALL ONFIDENTIAL!
