When will I know if I caught a cold sore from the time of possible infection?!
Question: My friend drank from a bottle of whiskey, then I poured a drink for myself. I found out he has a cold sore. When would I know if I caught it and what are my chances of catching it in this situation?

Well it is possible to catch a cold sore. The first symptom I have is a tingly feeling anytime I touch that part of my lip. Then it swells up some. I use this stuff called Novitra it was in the same aisle as the cold medicine and carmax is. It usually takes care of them reall fast.
I had asked my doctor a similar question and was told that its not that easy to get a cold sore. First you have to have a weak immune system, recovering from a cold or flu, two an open cut or broken skin within the mouth or around the mouth helps. But that's what I was told probably to calm me down. I would also like to think the whiskey did its job and killed any Trace of that cold sore before the liquid touched your lips.
Also, if you already have the antibodies to hsv1, you are already infected, and can't get it again.
Up to 80% of the population has them, while only about 20-40% of them actually get cold sores.
To find out if you do, ask your doc for a type specific IgG herpes blood test.
