A manic episode is diagnosed if elevated mood occurs with three or more of the other symptoms most of the day, nearly every day, for 1 week or longer. If the mood is irritable, four additional symptoms must be present.

Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood
Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or of being "slowed down"
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Restlessness or irritability
Sleeping too much, or can't sleep
Change in appetite and/or unintended weight loss or gain
Chronic pain or other persistent bodily symptoms that are not caused by physical illness or injury
Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
A depressive episode is diagnosed if five or more of these symptoms last most of the day, nearly every day, for a period of 2 weeks or longer.

Bipolar disorder is a treatable illness marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. It is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression because a person’s mood can alternate between the mania (highs) and depression (lows). This change in mood or "mood swing" can last for hours, days weeks or months.

bipolar disorder signs & symptoms vary person. halucinations, manic episodes, sudden attitude changes, sex drive, distracted.
see a doctor. usual medication is lithium
I am bi-polar and I can tell you that it varies..from fairly mild and controllable to uncontrollable. The basic symptoms are almost always the same though. Mood swings, severe mood swings up and down without a moments notice, violent temper, feeling extremely depressed at times, extremely easy to get upset, watch for things that may trigger you and get to your doctor. People with bi-polar really need help and most of the time medication. In the meantime if you or someone else you care about seems to be going down the "bad" mood road.which is a lot more severe than it sounds, be aware that if you feel like it may become dangerous to get yourself to the emergency room as soon as possible..don't chance it.
Periods of depression (sleep abnormalities, feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, lack of motivation, "doom and gloom" feelings, possibly suicidal tendencies) that alternate with manic symptoms (high energy, impulsivity, spending sprees, hyper-activity, general "high", possibly delusional thinking). It is a mental illness that can incapacitate a person yet it is very difficult to treat because most people enjoy and benefit from the "highs" so much that they don't want to medicate them. Many people don't truly appreciate the damaging potential of these highs and lows because they only think about what is gained from the highs. Many relationships end because it is so difficult for a loved one to ride this roller coaster. The cycles can vary from weekly to yearly.

agression, violence, extreme mood swings.
You got some very good answers so I'm not going to go into that but what I will say is that people with bipolar are NOT crazy. Many uneducated people will say and think that, which is a crying shame. Which make me really ticked off. Yes, bipolar is technically a mental illness and when a bipolar is off their meds they do tend to go for lack of a better term a bit mental, however they are not "crazy, crazy".

With meds they can lead normal and very successful lives. In fact most bipolars do which is great! Not only that most bipolars have been found to be either very creative, artistic or very smart. Given the right help and the lack of prejudice that mental illness comes who knows just what their contribution can be in the world.
