Thrombocytosis is the descriptive name. There are several causes. The platelets are often elevated in inflammatory conditions. Essential thrombocytosis can occur in the setting of bone marrow hyperproductivity. ABove answers refer to leukemia (primary white blood cell increase) and polycythemia vera (primary a red blood cell increase). Both of these can cause some platelet elevation, but not usually.
