My nephew is 20 years old and is mentally ill--can we have him committed legally!

Question: He has uncontrollably violent psychotic episodes, triggered by alcohol. I don't know how or where he gets the alcohol, but he is definately an alcoholic. He remembers very little after the episode, both during and after the episode he is not rational.

All of these answers are great. My son had a huge psychotic break a few months after turning 18. He's now 20. He's been diagnosed bi-polar. I filed a petition & a court order on him. He's now under court ordered treatment. As someone wrote, if he's a danger to himself or to others, you need to act immediately. Good luck.

He'll have to be evaluated and even then, the bar is pretty high for committing someone; I'd suggest that you very carefully document any violent episodes. Good Luck.
if you can prove that he is a threat to himself or others.Baker Act
If the diagnosis comes from a qualified physician then yes you can have him committed, probably to a treatment center then released to half-way house to monitor. The doctor has to agree that he is a threat to himself or the public at large, it is just not your word that he is crazy. And alcohol is an illness, but it affects a little different than run-of-the mill craziness. Here is a scenario for you, you report him and he gets a summons to appear before Dr. whoever in 10 days, I think he would be sober by then and probably acting correctly, the Dr. would have nothing to base it off of, so he may not find that there is enough evidence to support treatment facility. Just a thought, that cycle could repeat an unlimited amount of time until there was just an overwhelming amount of paperwork on him. Have evidence ready when he has to see the doctor to back up your claims.
If he is committing acts of physical violence you need to call the police. If he is deemed to be a danger they have to put him in a hospital if he truly is psychotic and if he is not they will put him in jail. He would definitely belong in one of the two. Violence is not acceptable.
Of COURSE YA CAN! HAVE FUN! WEEE!
He needs to see a doctor bay there's no need for him to be committed. Why are you trying to take the easy way out instead of trying to help him.
If he is violent, CALL THE POLICE. sometimes the criminal justice system is the only way people can get help, unfortunately. They will take him in, detox him, have him evaluated and make the necessary referral for you.
