My physical therapist (for my hand she was called occupational therapist)provided me with two hard hand braces. They were made of a plastic that can be molded, then hardened after she got the right form for my specific need. They both fit my hand and about six inches above the wrist, held by a couple of velcro straps. The first, made when I really needed to keep the hand raised and fingers extended, but curved slightly. This one was fan-shaped to keep my fingers spread apart. I used it a as much as I could stand. As therapy continued and my tendons were stretched I was given my second one, that held my hand in a more comfortable position and I could wear it for longer periods.
After awhile, I realized I'd never have use of my hand and keeping my wrist straight was most important, so I bought a wrap around splint specifically for the hand, with a metal strip from above the wrist to my palm. I message my fingers to keep them from staying scrunched up.
A physical or occupational therapist can give your friend excercizes to do at home, mine are called "self range" excercizes. This works to keep loose the fingers, wrist and shoulder. Also, if there's problem with a seperated shoulder which I had after I started walking with a cane, a sling is a good idea if it's not too uncomfortable. Just tell your friend not to give up. I'm a 12 year survivor, still here and independant.
