The thyroid controls your metabolism. There is hypo and hyper. There are so many symtoms that go with each. When my husband started medicine for hypo everything changed about him. My mom has Graves Disease, so does George H.W. Bush (the older one). THe thyroid regulates moisture and in my mom's case she had to have it partially removed and she now relies on eye drops and nose drops to keep her membranes lubricated.
